Admission officers read thousands of applications every year. They can often tell the difference between a student who is genuinely engaged in creating the best college experience possible for themselves, and a student who’s just checking the boxes.

If you think joining a bunch of clubs or volunteering for something you don’t really care about is a strategy that will help your application stand out, you may want to think again!

It’s officially college essay season, and if you think it needs to be some sort of grand, sweeping gesture, think again!

The essay is the one place on the application where the student can become more than grades, test scores, and abilities. The best essays are not about the greatest achievements, it’s how the student sees the world and what they value.

Your teenager doesn’t need to have a perfectly polished academic future at the age of 17.

But, if they indicate a particular interest on a college application, it helps when the rest of the application gives an admissions officer some reason to believe that interest in genuine.

I find myself repeating these words to my students: the major shouldn’t be the starting point of exploration. It should be on of the things that comes out of it!

The teens I work with usually aren’t anti-college. They just haven’t found their reason yet. Once they get curious about something (anything, even if it’s unrelated to school), the path gets clearer. Sometimes that’s a traditional 4-year school. Sometimes it’s not.
