In 1951, a new name came to life: Texas Southern University. Our name is our power.

These are the faces of the first generation of Tigers to call it TSU. They stepped into a newly named institution and helped establish a legacy of Excellence in Achievement that continues today.

As the first students to carry the Texas Southern University name, they laid the foundation for the generations that followed.

Seventy-five years later, we honor where we began and celebrate the legacy they helped build.

Happy TSU Naming Day.

That legacy is preserved not only through historical records but through the families whose lives have been transformed by Texas Southern University.

In this documentary from our partners at , viewers can explore the story behind our name and the people who continue to carry its legacy forward. Beginning at the 1:00 mark, beloved TSU historian Dr. Merline Pitre shares the significance of Naming Day and the impact of the university's transformation. A dream deferred is NEVER a dream denied. From driving Uber to support his wife through law school, to being hooded by her as a fellow Thurgood Marshall School of Law graduate! 🎓⚖️

For Robert E. May Jr., the path to becoming an attorney wasn't a straight line, but a journey built on faith, hard work, and a phenomenal support system.

When Robert and his wife, attorney Shaneil Snipe-May, first arrived in Houston in 2020 for her to attend TMSL, Robert did whatever it took to support them, including driving for Uber and outdoor sales.

But standing on the campus of Texas Southern University, inspired by the giants who walked before him, Robert knew he belonged here, too. With his wife's emotional support, he took the leap.

At the Spring 2026 TMSL Hooding Ceremony, their journey came full circle in the most beautiful way: Shaneil had the honor of hooding Robert as he graduated from their shared alma mater.

Robert’s story is a testament to and the power of community. He leaves TMSL as a former 2L Class President, an award-winning mock trial advocate, and a future litigation attorney at Clarke Law PLLC.

As Robert says: “Protect it. Improve it. And pass it on.”

Congratulations, Robery May, J.D.. Read Robert's full story here: https://texassouthernnews.com/a-dream-deferred-not-denied-robert-e-may-jr-s-journey-at-thurgood-marshall-school-of-law/

Built through the powerful partnership between the university and the City of Houston, the new facility includes a 20,000-square-foot hangar, 4,500 square feet of classroom space, and an 8,000-gallon fuel storage system projected to save hundreds of thousands in fuel costs.

With a growing fleet of 12 Cirrus SR20 aircraft and a twin-engine aircraft on the way, TSU continues to soar toward its vision of becoming the premier aviation program in the nation.

This ribbon-cutting symbolized a declaration that the future of aviation leadership is being built at Texas Southern University.

Michael Vouffo arrived at Texas Southern University following a family legacy, but leaves having built one of his own. 🎓✨

Inspired by his older brother, a TSU graduate, Michael stepped onto campus unsure of what college would hold. What he discovered was a community that challenged him to grow, lead, and fully embrace who he is. Today, the Vouffo family legacy at TSU continues to grow with multiple brothers choosing Tigerland as home.

From freshman mentee to President of Campus PALS, the Houston native transformed his experience into a full circle moment by mentoring and uplifting the next generation of Tigers. Along the way, the Chemistry and Mathematics double-major became a Freeman Scholar, LSAMP Scholar, campus leader, and proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Now, Michael begins his next chapter with Teach For America while preparing for medical school, carrying forward the lessons, leadership, and purpose shaped at Texas Southern.

Some walks across the commencement stage carry a weight that words can hardly capture.. 🕊️🎓

At the Spring 2026 Commencement of Texas Southern University, families of our Fallen Tigers crossed the stage on behalf of the loved ones whose journeys were completed in spirit.

The mother of Sincere Barrette, a senior Computer Science major whose impact will never be forgotten, walked in honor of her son. For Tyler Seastrunk, the graduating senior who was preparing to walk that very day, three of his family members stood together to receive the degree he earned. And the mother of Ms. DeAndra A. Durham, Executive Master of Public Administration student and TSU alumna, accepted her posthumous degree with grace and strength.

Their seats may have been empty, but their presence filled the room. Today, we honor their legacies, and the families carrying their dreams forward.

Forever Tigers. 💔🐅

Texas Southern University didn’t just shape Jerry LeDoux, III’s career. It transformed his life. 🎓🎥

The North Houston native arrived on campus unsure of what his future would look like, but once he stepped onto Tiger Walk, he found purpose, community, and the confidence to bet on himself.

As a multimedia journalist, student co-host, Editor-in-Chief, and storyteller, Jerry made it his mission to amplify the voices of others with honesty and integrity. Even through grief and personal challenges, he continued forward carrying the legacy of mentorship, purpose, and impact.

Now, he leaves Tigerland with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and a full-time opportunity as a Multimedia Journalist at the number one station in a top-75 market.

She came to TSU as one woman. She leaves as a stronger and wiser version of herself. ❤️🐯

From Inglewood, California to the heart of Third Ward, Serenity Bagley built a legacy rooted in resilience, faith, sisterhood, and purpose. As co-captain of the Motion of the Ocean, she led boldly, broke barriers, and showed young girls everywhere that greatness has never belonged to one body type, one background, or one definition of beauty.

Serenity’s journey was never about avoiding closed doors. It was about trusting God enough to keep going when they did not open immediately. And every time she kept pushing, something greater was waiting on the other side.

From serving through Tau Beta Sigma, crossing into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, leading one of the most visible eras of Motion of the Ocean, and dancing alongside Beyoncé during the 2024 Beyoncé Bowl, Serenity carried TSU with strength and grace every step of the way.

Included in this carousel is footage from the documentary we produced following Serenity and the Ocean of Soul during their historic Beyoncé Bowl performance experience. 🎥✨

“One door closes, but another one is opening.”
