The most exciting science in the 21st century is likely to evolve among, not within, traditional disciplines. Around the world, Bioengineering has begun to establish itself as an independent field and engineering discipline, at the boundary between biology and the physical sciences. UCLA and the faculty of bioengineering have embraced this critical and unique opportunity to make a rapid significant impact in the field with an innovative curriculum, state-of-the-art facilities, and cutting-edge research. The Department administers a top ranked graduate program in biomedical engineering and a hypercompetitive undergraduate program in bioengineering. The 8 core and 4 joint faculty collaborate with over 70 affiliate faculty throughout the highly interdisciplinary UCLA campus to train over 250 undergraduate and 200 graduate students. UCLA Bioengineering currently enjoys the strongest student applicant pool int he UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering, which is among the top public engineering schools in the U.S. The Department also benefits from it's geographic proximity to the acclaimed UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and the numerous excellent departments in the sciences that make UCLA among the world's premier universities.

The UCLA Department of Bioengineering recently hosted SoCalBio Networking @ UCLA on August 27, 2026, at the James West Alumni Center, welcoming professionals from across the life sciences ecosystem. Organized in partnership with the Southern California Biomedical Council (SoCalBio), the event aimed to foster meaningful connections between academia and industry in fields such as biotechnology, medical technology, diagnostics, and digital health. Faculty, researchers, and students joined executives and innovators from leading companies to exchange ideas, explore collaborative opportunities, and strengthen ties within the Greater Los Angeles life sciences community. Sept. 17-18, 2026 — A great two days at UCLA Digital Health Workshop 4.0, bringing together leaders and innovators across imaging AI, digital biomarkers, wearables, precision health, genomics, and clinical translation to explore how data and technology can shape a healthier tomorrow.

This event was made possible through the collaboration of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering bringing medicine and engineering together to advance the future of digital health. 💡🧬📊

A huge thank you to our conference co-chairs Liang Gao, PhD; Linda Demer, MD, PhD; and Fang-Yi “Ida” Su, PhD, and our host and track chair Dino Di Carlo, PhD, for their leadership.
