The most exciting science in the 21st century is likely to evolve among, not within, traditional disciplines. Around the world, Bioengineering has begun to establish itself as an independent field and engineering discipline, at the boundary between biology and the physical sciences. UCLA and the faculty of bioengineering have embraced this critical and unique opportunity to make a rapid significan

t impact in the field with an innovative curriculum, state-of-the-art facilities, and cutting-edge research. The Department administers a top ranked graduate program in biomedical engineering and a hypercompetitive undergraduate program in bioengineering. The 8 core and 4 joint faculty collaborate with over 70 affiliate faculty throughout the highly interdisciplinary UCLA campus to train over 250 undergraduate and 200 graduate students. UCLA Bioengineering currently enjoys the strongest student applicant pool int he UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering, which is among the top public engineering schools in the U.S. The Department also benefits from it's geographic proximity to the acclaimed UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and the numerous excellent departments in the sciences that make UCLA among the world's premier universities.

This past quarter, our BGA members have been committed to their outreach efforts. Members recently have done a high school visit to talk to students about their journeys so far as bioengineers in the UCLA Bioengineering department and have also participated in the LA Maker Faire to offer hands-on activities like a portable microscope demonstration! On Wednesday, March 11th, 2026, the UCLA Bioengineering department hosted our annual Capstone Design Symposium for our graduating senior students. Dr. Sean Yamada-Hunter, one of our newest assistant professors, helped host this year’s capstone symposium alongside various graduate teaching assistants who also guided the undergraduate students with their capstone projects for the past two quarters. BioE faculty members who also assisted the students were in attendance and affiliated faculty helped judge the projects as well.
Congratulations to all the teams who partook in the Symposium. Check out more photos from the event in the link in our story/story highlights

New research shows that after the body’s defenses kill the virus behind COVID-19, leftover digested chunks of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein can target specific immune cells based on their shape. The revelations could explain why certain populations of cells that detect and fight infection are depleted in patients with severe COVID-19, and shed light on the omicron variant’s milder symptoms.
