Tips from UCLA Undergraduate Admission staff to help you approach writing your PIQs! Although you have until November 30 to submit your UC application, give yourself enough time to draft your responses so you feel confident once it is time to hit submit.

As you begin brainstorming and drafting your PIQs, we thought we'd share some tips to help you as you get started!

Start early: Give yourself time to think about your topics and carefully consider the rationale behind each question.

Be clear. Be focused. Be organized: Make sure your answers to the questions follow a logical structure. Try to think about how it may seem to an audience who doesn’t know you. Input from people you trust — teachers, friends, relatives — can help you get perspective on how your answers affect those who are reading them.

Be careful with humor and clichés: What might seem funny or bitingly ironic to you may not seem that way to someone who doesn’t know you. Remember that these questions are an opportunity for you to give us a complete picture of yourself. Don’t allow clichés to speak for you.

Don’t manufacture hardship: Your answer to a personal insight question isn’t effective simply because it chronicles difficult circumstances. An effective answer to any question gives us a clear sense of your personal qualities and how you’ve used and developed them in response to your opportunities and challenges.

Use specific examples to illustrate your ideas: Prove to us with written examples that you have a sense of who you are, where you’re going and how you will use your education and experiences to accomplish your goals. Although some events have long-term or even lifetime ramifications, it’s usually better to focus on recent events because they shed more light on who you are right now.

Finally, give yourself plenty of time for revisions: Read your writing to others, and revise for clarity in content and in style. Pay attention to rules of correct grammar and punctuation, and don’t forget to spell check.

Now that we're in August, it's time to keep track of the important upcoming dates and deadlines if you are planning to apply to UCLA!

Important Dates:
August 1: The UC application opened!
October 1-November 30: Application filing period (this is when you can submit your UC application!)
December & January: Supplemental Applications (if applicable) - Check admission.ucla.edu/apply/supplemental-applications for deadlines.
January 31: Priority deadline for transfer applicants to report final fall grades and in-progress or planned coursework.
March 2: Deadline for applicants to submit their financial aid application (FAFSA), Dream Act, and Cal Grant GPA verification forms.

It's August 1st! This means that the UC Application for Fall 2027 is now open! You are able to get started now ahead of the submission period, which is October 1-November 30.

Incoming students, the deadline to send us your official transcripts is fast approaching! Unless otherwise stated in your Admission Contract, you must send us your official transcripts by July 1. The deadline to submit AP/IB test scores is July 15. More information can be found on the New Student Checklists on our website!

Electronic transcripts are our preferred method of submission and are accepted from the following vendors: Credentials, Inc. - TranscriptsNetwork (use this service, please do not send through email), E-Scrip, National, Student Clearinghouse, Naviance, Parchment, Scoir, Certree, Scribbles. We won’t accept transcripts sent through email as official. If your school doesn’t utilize these vendors, you’ll need to submit official paper copies of your documents.

New Student & Transition Programs (NSTP) is your next stop after submitting your SIR! We support your transition to UCLA through the Bruin to Bruin Project, New Student and Family Orientation, New Bruin Leadership Academy, and various other programs throughout the academic year. As you begin to plan your next steps at UCLA, the most important thing to remember from NSTP is that orientation is a mandatory requirement for all new students. In addition to providing important information about UCLA, orientation is an exciting time to meet other new students, receive academic advising for your major, and enroll in your fall quarter courses. Adebanke 'Banke' (she/her) is a senior transfer student from the San Pedro majoring in Political Science with a minor in Global Studies. At UCLA, she has been involved in IGNITE, FAST, the Nigerian Student Association, and the Transfer Student Center, where she serves on the communications team. Banke is passionate about community, advocacy, international development and helping fellow transfer students find their place at UCLA.
