Through my Tisch Summer Fellowship with the Massachusetts Education Justice Alliance (MEJA), I had the opportunity to help organize and present at the 2024 Massachusetts Education Justice Convening. Seeing so many organizers, teachers, scholars, parent advocates, and students come together to strategize, share skills, and strengthen relationships for the shared purpose of advancing education justice was truly inspiring. Many times, impact is hard to see, but at this convening the progress of MEJA’s movement building was palpable.

What does civic engagement mean to you and how has your time at Tufts shaped that definition?

Civic engagement can be a lens through which we understand our entire lives, may it be the ways we interact with others, our life choices, or our place in society. The ethics, attitudes, and outlooks that I have learned from my civic engagement at Tufts and before (e.g., cultural humility, civic responsibility, positionality) can (and I argue, should) guide not only our explicitly civic and political work, but also our daily actions. Consider what would happen if we approached our next conversation from a posture of humility, paused to consider the impact of our next purchase, and continually reflected on the responsibility that stems from our privileged identities. Civic engagement can help us to be, and bring about, the change we wish to see in the world.

What’s something you’re looking forward to post-Tufts?

I am excited to continue doing research and evaluation with Tisch College. Through a generous grant from the Educating Character Initiative, Tisch staff and I developed a new measure of civic character. I look forward to using the measure in evaluations of civic engagement programming to better understand what types of experiences lead to what types of meaningful civic character growth for which students.

The community partnership I have been lucky to build with the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI) has been an incredible joy of my Tufts experience. During out practicum class last year I was lucky to work with the Greater Boston Community Land Trust Network to create a resource library about CLTs; this introduced me to DSNI’s team. This year, DSNI generously welcomed me into their organizing team for an exciting project leading a radical community planning process about the future of a vacant lot, using art, imaginative visioning/prototyping, and creative activation. Building relationships with the amazing DSNI team and their thoughtful inclusion of me into this project has both been incredibly enjoyable and also an incredibly valuable learning experience for me a future community-centered practitioner.
