Environmental Studies Program, Tufts University

Environmental Studies Program, Tufts University We are the undergraduate environmental studies academic program at Tufts University.

Follow us for updates on our student work, public lectures, and environmental news. The Environmental Studies Program (ENVS) is a multidisciplinary undergraduate program dedicated to: studying our natural surroundings; designs that minimize degradation of those surroundings; and providing the social and political tools to preserve and improve the environment. The program trains students in social

sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and humanities. We offer 5 track majors, including Environmental Science; Sustainability, Policy and Equity; Environmental Communications: Food Systems and the Environment; and a Self-Designed major with Advisor. We also offer an Environmental Science and Policy minor specific for Engineering students. In addition to our academic programs, ENVS has a weekly Lunch & Learn Lecture series that is open to students, faculty, staff, and the public; and we periodically have major traveling lecturers, specialized informations sessions for student job seekers, and publish a bi-monthly environmental newsletter. Student videos and artwork can be viewed on our YouTube, Vimeo and Flicker sites. Visit us at as.tufts.edu/environmentalstudies to view the many things going on at Tufts ENVS.

Hoch Cunningham Lectures are back for the spring semester! Join us this Thursday, Jan. 15, in Curtis Hall or virtually via Zoom for a lecture from Dr. Fern Thompsett.

In a time marked by climate crisis and growing political frustration, it can be easy to feel like the possibilities for environmentally just ways of living together are narrowing. And yet, human beings’ capacities to imagine and actualize better worlds persist, in subtle and spectacular ways. In this talk, Dr. Fern Thompsett will draw the idea of Ecotopia (eco + utopia) from speculative fiction into the real world, tracing key examples of ecological world-building from the historical Brook Farm in the Northeast, to her own research with present-day Anti-Civilization communities in the Pacific Northwest. By looking at how these experiments have pushed the limits of possibility into the realm of radical imagination and back again, Dr. Thompsett will show how opportunities for change can be found in the here-and-now, sometimes in unexpected places.

This talk is co-sponsored by the University Ecologies Project and Tufts Department of Anthropology.
