Mentorship can change the course of a student’s future. For Isa Sabir ’21, M.D. ’26, support through FIU Medicine’s Albert E. Dotson Sr. Premedical Program helped guide his journey from premed student to future emergency medicine physician.

Now, as he begins his residency at HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, Sabir hopes to continue mentoring others and giving back to the community that shaped him.

From food prep to disaster response logistics, FIU students teamed up with the Guy Fieri Foundation for a hands-on emergency response exercise at Biscayne Bay Campus. Working alongside emergency food responders, students gained real-world experience serving communities during times of crisis.

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢

These campus visitors aren’t the ones we study, but FIU is home to real sea turtle science. Marine ecologist Dr. Elizabeth Whitman researches how green sea turtles find food, avoid sharks, and survive a changing ocean across the Caribbean and Florida. She also runs FIU’s National Save The Sea Turtle Foundation internship, training the next generation of conservationists.

This morning at FIU’s NSF-NHERI Wall of Wind Experimental Facility, researchers from Florida International University, The University of Kansas , and The University of Alabama subjected a full-scale manufactured home to simulated hurricane-force winds.

The research, led by the University of Kansas, will generate data designed to inform future updates to federal manufactured housing wind-safety standards. Roughly 22 million Americans
live in manufactured housing

This is what a Top 50 public research university looks like in practice: solving problems with national consequence, in the city that needs the answers most.
