UW-Milwaukee Interpreter Training Program

UW-Milwaukee Interpreter Training Program The program educates students to be competent bilingual interpreters, with an emphasis on service.

Students (future interpreters) who demonstrate the qualities of effective practitioners are those who reflect on how their choices and decisions affect the Deaf Community; they consider their practices and ensure their decisions and behaviors support equal access and communication for Deaf people; they own their mistakes and share them with others. Most importantly, they seek input and advice from

Deaf people and are open and receptive to Deaf people’s responses and viewpoint. The internalization of Deaf heart must come from the student’s/ interpreter’s own sense of justice and morality. (Adapted from Sign Language Interpreters and the Quest for a Deaf Heart, Betty Colonomos, February 26, 2013)
All programmatic decisions, class discussions and activities are centered on this belief about attitude and community engagement. Students and instructors are expected to embrace this philosophy not only in what they say but by what they do.
