Congratulations to our Class of 2026 Valedictorian: Melody Ng '26 🎓!

A double major in Theatre and Politics, and with a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies, Melody has kept herself busy as a Gael. She has directed, stage-managed, and starred in several SMC theatre shows, including the recent spring production of Pippin. She has served as class chair for Associated Students, been a peer mentor to first-years, and was a Social Justice Advocate with the Intercultural Center.

As she looks toward the future, Melody plans to continue performing and eventually attend law school. For her, giving the valedictory address was a chance to reflect on her own journey. “Being an immigrant has really allowed me to be conscientious of my intersecting identities while really seeing and celebrating other people for theirs,” she says. “That’s what I hope Commencement will be: a moment to celebrate each other, and all of who we are.”

Saint Mary’s College of California has named Gesine Gerhard, PhD, as the inaugural Dean of the new School of Arts & Sciences.

An accomplished academic leader, scholar, and educator, Dr. Gerhard joins Saint Mary’s after eight years as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Drake University, where she led interdisciplinary innovation, faculty development, student-success initiatives, and strategic academic growth.

As Saint Mary’s launches its newly unified School of Arts & Sciences, Dr. Gerhard’s leadership will help advance collaboration across the natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities while strengthening the College’s commitment to whole-person education and academic excellence.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Gerhard to the Saint Mary’s community as she helps lead this important next chapter for the College!

Big things are happening at Saint Mary’s this summer! The College is launching the new School of Arts & Sciences in July. Unifying the natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities, the new school reflects both SMC’s enduring values and a forward-looking vision for student learning and success—focusing programs, strengthening areas of high student interest, and expanding interdisciplinary learning.
“The School of Arts and Sciences creates a more integrated academic environment for students at a moment when the most important questions facing society increasingly demand fluency across disciplines,” says Carol Ann Gittens, PhD, MBA, who serves as Senior Vice President and Provost.
