All smiles as we wrap up Teacher Appreciation Week πŸ“šπŸŽ

Our senior history/social studies students Jocelyn Stark, Briah Cook, and Bryli Jones are ready to share their passion for history with future middle and high school students!

Briah Cook not only successfully completed her student teaching at Paducah Tilghman High School this semester, she also presented at a conference at the University of Kentucky last week and participated on a student teaching panel hosted by the MSU chapter of the Kentucky Education Association (KEA). Well done, Briah!

Briah's conference paper "The Moscow Art Theatre Tours America: Exploring the Impact of Konstantin Stanislavsky's Method on American Acting, 1923-24," was produced in Dr. Hilton HIS 400 course last semester.

Congratulations to all our amazing history seniors! Thanks for the memories!
See you at graduation!!! πŸŽ“πŸ₯³

Finals week is teacher appreciation week! πŸŽπŸŽ‰πŸ“šπŸ₯³ Thank your educators!

We want to highlight our history/social studies pre-service teachers, starting with our juniors Cecilia Broxon, Emmi Knight, Seth Skebo, Taylor Smith, and Ella Zimmerman, who completed their first practicum at regional high schools and had a fantastic semester of growth with Dr. Koulisis in HIS 361!

Wishing them and all our students the best during finals!

Last Friday Dr. Black, Dr. Horton, and Dr. Koulisis brought students in History, English, and Honors to Memphis to visit both the Civil Rights Museum, which included a superb special exhibit on Bayard Rustin, and the Rock n Soul Museum.

We had a great time synthesizing classroom studies with museum exhibits, resulting in many conversations on twentieth century politics, culture, education, and social movements. We even had time for walking on Beale Street!

Though unable to travel with the group, big thanks to Dr. Osborne and Dominique Suiter for initiating, organizing, and logistics!

This is the last installment of the Spring 2026 Calloway County Public Library Public History Lecture Series. Former Murray State University Senior Lecturer Ted Franklin Belue will present "Thumbprint of my Father, Frank Belue: Homefront War Letters of a Common Man, 1941-1943." In 2023 a UPS box left at Ted Franklin Belue's door revealed a precious time-capsule he never knew existed: his dad’s WWII letters, army and family pictures, and official documents. Inducted just days before Pearl Harbor but spared from duty abroad, Ted's father, Frank Belue, clerked at Forts Bragg and Mackalls’s hospitals and rose in rank to become a TEC4 Sergeant. For a poor Mississippi boy whose parents lost their family farm in the Depression, went bust in Texas, and came to Orlando, he did well. Part memoir, part cultural history, Belue's talk, as narrated by his father's letters, includes such topics as bloody N**i U-Boat warfare off North Carolina's coast; N**i POWs; pro vs. anti-war church of Christ debates and schisms; Ted's first-hand memories of Orlando’s segregated Black district; the birth of Daytona Beach's Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAACs); New York City’s sights/nightlife; army base recreation; spiritual conflicts; pop music of the day; and Belue's readapting to civilian life.
