CHFA at Murray State is pleased to announce the next installment in the Humanities+ Series, “Life Lab: Hometowns & Histories,” on Tuesday, November 3 from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the Breathitt Room of Pogue Library. The event is free and open to the campus community and the public.
The Humanities+ Life Lab events are a series of technology-free experiences offered throughout the school year to help people (dis)connect, reflect, and build resilience.
Pogue Special Collections Library serves as a public research center on local history and genealogy, which participants in “Hometowns & Histories” will have access to for the event. Library staff will also be on hand to answer questions and help participants follow their curiosities.
Dr. Jeff McLaughlin, Professor and Director of Archives and Special Collections at Murray State University, will lead the session. He says the “Hometowns & Histories” event is focused on encouraging students, faculty, and the public to engage with archival material and see how fascinating research can be.
“There are some great stories that just won’t get told unless we start digging in local archives and put all of the puzzle pieces together ourselves.”

Last week, students in HIS 310: History of the Movies “took over” the Cinema International at Murray State showing of “We Shall Not Be Moved.” Students created fliers for the showing, spoke about the film during an interview with WKMS , introduced the film, and led the post-showing discussion. Thanks to Dr. Feinstein for coordinating this experiential learning experience, to all the students who participated in the activity, and to all who attended the films!

Who is ready to take some amazing History courses? The Department of History is offering a variety of US, European, Global and General Elective courses being offered for the Spring 2027 course.

For those wanting to know more about US History, courses for the Spring 2027 semester include:
🇺🇸HIS 221 (US HIstory to 1865) and HIS 222 (US History since 1865), which are both University Studies courses
🇺🇸HIS 320: Topics in African American History with Dr. Clardy
🇺🇸HIS 333: Military History of the US with Dr. Humphreys
🇺🇸HIS 442: History of the New South with Dr. Humphreys

We are also offering HIS 314: LGBTQ+ History with Dr. Lindner, which can be counted as a Diverse Perspectives elective for History majors. This course is an introduction to the study of LGBTQ+ (Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Q***r, etc.) individuals, communities and identities from a historical perspective and in societies across the world. Key theories in historiographical analysis, methods and sources of historical research, as well as various approaches to creating history will also be examined.

For students with a Museum Studies minor, there are a number of exciting courses that you can take, including HIS 380: Public History, which is one of the required course options, as well as an exciting number of elective options!

ℹ️The film focuses on Socorro, a cantankerous lawyer, who lives in an apartment building that overlooks the plaza where the Mexican government massacred thousands of student protesters in 1968-including Socorro’s brother, whose death still haunts her. With the help of corrupt officials and a reformed narco, she fights to track down the soldier who killed her brother and questions just how far she’s willing to go to obtain justice.

🇪🇸The film is part if the Spanish Film Club series with the support of PRAGDA | Latin Cinema and the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain.
