Friedman, a pioneering disability rights activist and adjunct associate professor in our Disability Studies programs. Meet Dr. Carl Kirton, PhD, DNP, MBA, RN, ANP, FAAN, a nationally recognized nurse leader, educator, and scholar with an extensive background in healthcare leadership and executive management.

Dr. Kirton currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Nursing (AJN), the world’s longest-running nursing journal. Before joining AJN, he served as Chief Nursing Officer at University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, and held executive leadership positions at several major healthcare organizations.

In addition to his leadership experience, Dr. Kirton is an accomplished educator who has taught at leading nursing schools throughout the East Coast.

As a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, Dr. Kirton is widely respected for his contributions to nursing leadership, scholarship, workforce development, and advancing the voice of nursing in healthcare.
