Congratulations to UCF Sociology doctoral student Jaylen Christie, whose latest illustrated science fiction novella, Thermosphere, sold out its first printing in just six days!

Released during World Space Week, Thermosphere continues the adventures of Stink Bomb Man and The Brain Kids, a comic book series featuring young Black superheroes who use their intelligence, creativity and STEM skills to tackle extraordinary challenges. An author, illustrator and public relations professional, Jaylen brings his passion for representation and storytelling into his academic pursuits. His sociology research explores representations of Black superheroes in popular culture, demonstrating how comics can provide opportunities to examine identity, race, and social narratives.

Don’t mind us! We’re just doing Sociology in Barcelona! 🇪🇸📚🌍

We’re halfway through Introduction to Sociology at the UCF Barcelona Center, led by Dr. Angela Vergara and bringing together students from across majors for a truly immersive study abroad experience.

From exploring local markets and visiting Parc Güell to learning from Barcelona’s rich history, culture, architecture, and everyday life, students are experiencing sociology beyond the traditional classroom. Because sociology is not just something we read about. It is something we observe, experience, question, and live.

Studying abroad gives students the opportunity to see the social world from new perspectives, challenge assumptions, build cultural awareness, and connect academic concepts to real people, places, and communities.
Barcelona has become our classroom, and every experience is another opportunity to think like a sociologist.

The adventure is well underway, and there is still so much more to learn and experience! 🧳🌍
