If you’ve walked through the lobby in the DePillars Building lately, chances are you’ve seen the student work from Associate Professor Michael Jones McKean’s Intro to Sculpture class! 🪚🪵

For most of these students, this course has been their beginnings in woodworking, and for this project, they had to incorporate 500 individual pieces of wood into their work! Tasked with making free-standing, over 87-inch-tall sculptures, students recently engaged in conversation and interaction with their own and their peers’ work.

Take a closer look at some of the moments from this special dialogue amongst the class!

The Department of Fine Arts is pleased to announce an upcoming visiting artist lecture with artist Nancy Lupo!

🗓️ October 12th, 2026
⏰ 12:30 PM
📍 Grace Street Theater (934 W. Grace St.)

Nancy Lupo is an artist currently based in Berlin. Her sculptures engage with material culture and language, exploring how collective fantasies and emotions become embedded in form. Sculpture and Extended Media junior, Nathan Varney, invited us behind the scenes to learn more about him, his practice, and to see the installation of his latest solo exhibition, “Logjam”! 🪵

Inspired by the skills and techniques he learned during his time as a weightlifter, Nathan’s work focuses on a performance surrounding logs sourced and relocated from the James River. He describes the process of going down to the river and personally lifting each log to bring back for his work, with this exhibition being a continuation of exploration started in Professor Corin Hewitt’s Sophomore Seminar class.

“Logjam” opens tonight at The Anderson Gallery (907 1/2 W Franklin St.) at 5 PM with a performance coinciding with the opening reception! This exhibition will be on view until October 17th!

Scratch, a collaborative exhibition created by VCUarts Graduate Students in Sculpture and Extended Media, is on view in the Seipel Gallery in the Murry N. DePillars Building (1000 West Broad Street) from now until September 19!

We invite you to join us for the closing reception on Friday, September 18, 5–7 PM!

Scratch is an exercise in collective making under durational and material constraints. Over the span of one and a half hours, participants used a set of volunteer materials and tools to perform a series of sculptural actions in silence. Every two minutes, a timer went off, prompting the participants to stop what they were doing and do something else – returning to observation or performing a different action. A practice in gestural improvisation, in attention, in relinquishing attachment to a fixed outcome, in the compromise and surprise of collaboration.

Sculpture and Extended Media program junior, Halima Bachir-Bouiadjra, invited us to learn more about herself, her work, and the process behind her latest solo exhibition, “A System of Exceptions”!

Halima describes her interest in the concept of paradoxes, citing that she enjoys creating work that is “trying to figure itself out”. Through collage, found objects, and humorous illogical space, Halima investigates scientific and philosophical representations with large, interactive installations.

“A System of Exceptions” opens at The Anderson Gallery tomorrow, Friday, August 28th! The opening reception will begin at 5 PM and will be on view until September 12th.

Congratulations, Halima, on your latest exhibition, and thank you for chatting with us!

With Round 2 of the 2026 MFA Thesis Exhibition on the horizon, let’s take a closer look at works by one of our participating graduates!

MFA Candidate alexis torres marroquín 🪡

alexis torres marroquín [b. 1999, Flushing, New York] is a sculptor, architectural designer, and poet working at the threshold where structure begins to ache, where the built environment reveals itself as a site of craving, control, and indulgence. Their practice leans into eroticism not as ornament but as method, pressing into the dirty negotiations and quiet violences that shape how bodies move, gather, and are held in space. Through fiber, garment construction, and mold-making, marroquín produces architectures that feel worn, stretched, and touched, at once seductive and abject, as if the building itself could bruise.

alexis will be featured in Round Two of the 2026 MFA Thesis Exhibition, opening this Friday, May 1st, at the Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU (601 W. Broad St)!
