Where Art and Sport Collide

What happens when students are given the opportunity to create work that lives beyond campus?

At SJSU, innovation happens at the intersection of creativity, technology and community.

This SJSU Magazine feature highlights the vision of Digital Media Art Professor G. Craig Hobbs and the students who transformed an idea into a large-scale public experience. Through hands-on learning, collaboration and bold creativity, they explored how art and sport can come together to tell a bigger story about connection and human potential.

The result is more than a project.

It's a reminder that some of the most meaningful learning happens when students are empowered to create something the world can experience. 🏀 🎨 💡

The San José State University Police Department (UPD) is aware that our department phone number (408) 924-2222 has been spoofed (a form of digital deception where a scammer disguises their identity by imitating a trusted person, business, or device). The perpetrators falsely claim to be immigration officials and threaten deportation.

UPD does not enforce federal immigration laws, nor will our department contact individuals regarding immigration related investigations, enforcement actions, or requests for personal information related to immigration status. UPD is actively investigating to determine the source of these spoofed calls.

If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from UPD, do not provide any personal or financial information. If you have concerns about the legitimacy of a call, please hang up and contact UPD directly.

Thank you for your cooperation and vigilance.

Featured in the latest issue of SJSU Magazine, “Sing Me a Story” captures the heart of what makes the Spartan community so special.

At SJSU, students and musicians are transforming stories written by children facing serious illness and hardship into original musical compositions performed live for the families who inspired them.

More than a performance, this program is empathy in action. It is creativity used to heal, connect and remind children that their voices matter.

Some stories stay with you long after the music ends. 💙💛

Featured in the most recent edition of the SJSU Magazine: Some journeys begin with a single class, a mentor, or a moment that changes how we see the world.

For SJSU alumnus Charles Cramer, that journey led from San José State to becoming one of the most respected landscape photographers in the world. Inspired by legendary photographer Ansel Adams and driven by a lifelong commitment to his craft, Cramer’s work captures more than scenery. It captures patience, perspective, and wonder.

His story is a reminder that Spartan ambition is not defined by one path. It is shaped by curiosity, creativity, and the courage to keep pursuing what moves you.

At SJSU, our alumni continue to leave their mark through art, innovation, and storytelling that inspires others to see the world differently.

Last week Tai Nguyen, ’26 Management Information Systems, became the first in his family to graduate from university — a monumental milestone for the aspiring data analyst and business
leader.

“The biggest thing I learned at SJSU? Showing up, really being there and making people feel supported,” he says. “You don’t really realize how big an impact you can make.”

This summer, Nguyen will serve as the second Ideas to Inspire fellow through the Center for Community Learning and Leadership, a summer program that offers funding, mentorship and professional skill-building opportunities. Nguyen will be working for the office of City of San José Mayor Matt Mahan, where he’ll apply his data analysis expertise to assist the city of San José.
