✨We recently wrapped up the Careers for Good conference at SMC’s Center for Media and Design, bringing together people and organizations exploring how careers can create positive change.

A big thank-you to SMC IxD Professor Luke Johnson, whose vision for Careers for Good is helping strengthen connections between SMC and organizations committed to making a difference.

We’re grateful to our keynote speaker, Alexa Carpena Rousso of Homeboy Media, all our speakers and panelists, the industry professionals who joined our coffee chats, our community partners, and SMC IxD student volunteers, as well as everyone who contributed their time, insights, and energy to make Careers for Good possible!

The work continues beyond the conference. This semester, SMC IxD is partnering with B Local LA on a senior industry project, connecting students with an organization advancing purpose-driven business.

From the IxD green room to the LA Fashion Week runway. ✨

Just this summer, SMC IxD senior Romell McKenzie ( Romell McKenzie ) learned to sew. A few months later, he was showing his own design on the runway at LA Fashion Week.

As part of a six-week upcycling competition with Black Design Collective, Romell created a full denim look inspired by fashion designer Patrick Kelly, known for his bold use of buttons and playful designs.

From sketching ideas in the IxD green room to thrifting pink boots, heat-pressing custom hearts, and experimenting with buckles and latches, Romell brought together skills from across his design journey. IxD classmate Ian ( Ian Lawrence Pagel )even helped bring his vision to life by 3D printing the oversized buttons that became a signature feature of the look!

We love seeing Romell bring together ideas and skills from across disciplines, and having the support of his IxD community along the way.

Congratulations, Romell! We’ll be expecting an invitation to your next fashion show. 😉❤️

We’re excited to have this curious, creative group as part of our IxD community and can’t wait to see what they explore, question, and make over the next two years.

They’ve hit the ground running, already researching out in the field to shape their future projects and discover what problems they want to start solving.

Last week, our IxD seniors got out of the studio and into the B Local Los Angeles community.✨

Romell, Audreen, and Marcus G. joined Good Company, a B Local LA event hosted at Room & Board (Room & Board Modern Furniture ) in Culver City, to meet people, make connections, and learn more about the community they’ll be working with this semester.

They came ready to research, too. Romell put his ethnographic research skills to work, gathering observations and data throughout the evening while documenting the event.

Now they’re bringing what they learned back to their projects, from storytelling to exploring ideas for B Local LA’s town hall and member insights efforts.

One of their key takeaways? B Corporations bring together determined people who support each other and learn from one another.

And apparently, they also know how to send you home with a very good snack bag. Audreen and Romell filled theirs with food and treats, all sourced from B Corps. 🥐

We’re so excited to announce B Local LA as an industry partner this year! 🌴

B Local LA () is part of the global B Corp community, bringing together businesses across Los Angeles that are part of a global movement working to benefit people and the planet.

On the first day of the fall semester, our IxD seniors jumped straight into discovery, working in five teams across CRM, storytelling, branding, website design, and town hall planning.

MaCher (a B Corp that designs sustainable, purpose-driven products) hosted us at their office on Abbott Kinney to meet with B Local LA stakeholders and begin digging into the work.

A big thank you to MaCher for welcoming our students, treating everyone to tacos 🌮, and sending them home with some very on-brand merch.

We’re excited to see where this partnership takes our students and what we’ll design together with B Local LA this year!

✨SMC IxD Professor Spotlight

Meet the professors who helped shape the new SMC IxD curriculum, bringing their diverse backgrounds, industry experience, and unique perspectives to the 2026–27 academic year.

Our first highlight is Professor Redelia Shaw, who started the Intro to Media Writing & Producing Short-Form Content course.

Professor Shaw started out as a VTR logger and camera assistant in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 1996 Olympic Games, and she went on to work on major productions.

✨Fall Kickoff at IxD!

A new semester, a new cohort, and a room full of curiosity.

We kicked off the fall semester by bringing Cohorts 10 and 11 together with IxD faculty, board members, industry leaders, and members of the SMC community for an afternoon of lunch, conversation, and connection.

After lunch, students headed to the Green Room for a creative reflection game led by IxD Professor Maxim. They explored questions around process, ambition, failure, inspiration, money, play, power, and what stands between where they are, and where they want to go.

The answers were as unexpected as they were thoughtful, with Claude Shannon even emerging as a shared source of inspiration. 👀

It was a pretty fitting way to start the year: asking bigger questions, getting curious, and thinking about what we want to create next.

Here’s to a new semester of creating, experimenting, and learning together. 🙌

Over the summer, Lie Burgess (IxD ’26) and Rafael Sanchez (IxD senior) participated in the Design Academy, while Devin Williams (IxD senior) explored AR through the Lens Academy.

Students spent the program experimenting, building, collaborating, and developing real-world skills alongside professional development designed to help prepare them for what comes next.

Jon Lopez (IxD ’26), and Snap Academy alum, returned as a program coach to help guide this year’s cohort, a pretty great full-circle moment for the community. 🙌

We’re proud of everything they created and the curiosity they brought to the experience.

Huge thanks to Snap Inc and Next Shift Learning for giving our students these amazing opportunities!
