This summer, the The Ohio State University Extension, Lucas County and the Lucas County Fair partnered to provide inclusive gardening opportunities for individuals of all ages and abilities.

During the week of the Lucas County Fair, several organizations and local businesses came together to present the Accessible Garden, a demonstration garden showcasing that gardening is for everyone. The Lucas County Agricultural Society and Lucas County Extension Office are committed to making the fair accessible to all and creating an event where every community member feels welcomed and connected to agriculture. The garden featured raised beds of varying heights, vertical planters, soothing wind chimes, and grass mats to improve accessibility for individuals using wheelchairs and strollers. This project was made possible through the generous support of The Ohio 4-H Foundation, Lucas County Junior Fair Board members, The Ability Center of Greater Toledo, and Ryan Family Farms. Their contributions helped provide materials and resources that enhanced the accessibility and educational value of the garden experience for fair visitors.

Our community's generosity really tipped the scales!⚖🥒

At the August 11 Lucas County Sneak a Zucchini on Our Porch event, neighbors shared the bounty of their gardens, donating a total of 105.08 pounds of produce. After weighing, sorting, and sharing, that harvest became 75 sampler bags for Head Start families in our community.

Thank you to everyone who helped us turn an abundance of zucchini, vegetables, and kindness into something meaningful. That's what community growth is all about!
