🍁 From Sap to Syrup! 🥞

Ever wonder how delicious maple syrup gets onto your pancakes? 🥞

Dr. Henry Streby, associate professor of ecology in the Department of Environmental Sciences The University of Toledo, UToledo Stranahan Arboretum, explains how students in the "Science and Policy of Foraging" class are taking a deep dive into the environment, learning the biology and ecology of trees by harvesting sap and making maple syrup! 🌳

Did you know it takes 40 to 50 gallons of tree sap to create just ONE gallon of pure maple syrup? 🤯

The best part? This student-made syrup isn't sold—it's given back to the community for free! ❤️

🌌 ICYMI, huge congratulations to Dr. Michael Cushing, professor of astronomy and director of the Ritter Planetarium and Brooks Observatory at The University of Toledo, for being selected as a 2026 American Astronomical Society Shapley Visiting Lecturer — one of just 21 astronomers nationwide chosen for this prestigious program!

As an R1 research institution, UToledo continues to drive discovery and expand public understanding of science through faculty like Cushing, UToledo Physics and Astronomy, whose work connects cutting-edge astronomical research with communities across the country. 🔭

As part of the program, Cushing will travel to schools and communities to present “The James Webb Space Telescope: A New Window into Our Origin Story,” inspiring audiences through astronomy outreach and science communication.

“I often describe my job as ‘learning things about the universe, and then sharing those things with people,'” Cushing said. “I really enjoy the challenge of explaining complex scientific ideas to all age groups, from children as young as four or five years old all the way up to adults.”

From groundbreaking brown dwarf research to decades of public engagement, Mike Cushing continues to showcase the impact of UToledo astronomy on a national stage! 🚀

From smashing more than 60 pumpkins with sledgehammers to launching mini pumpkins 75 yards across campus, graduate students in the UToledo Physics and AstronomyDepartment are making science impossible to ignore. 🎃🔭🚀

Their revitalized outreach program — recently featured in the American Astronomical Society blog by Physics & Astronomy graduate students Jacob Beavon (Chandar Group) and Abigail Ambrose (Visbal Group) — has grown from visits to five local schools last year to more than 40 hands-on astronomy and physics events this academic year — connecting local students, families and the Toledo community with science through classroom demos, star parties, planetarium talks and even a campus “Pumpkin Fling.”.

💬 “We spoke in both individual classrooms and assemblies, and our audience spanned 4th–12th grade. We received overwhelmingly positive feedback and were asked by all five schools to return this year. The positive word of mouth spread, as 30 schools have requested events this academic year, six times greater than we received last year.”

The Physics and Astronomy graduate student outreach volunteers are bringing concepts like gravity, angular momentum and astronomy to life using liquid nitrogen experiments, Van de Graaff generators, bowling ball pendulums, cratering demos and telescope observing nights — inspiring the next generation of scientists across northwest Ohio along the way. 🌌

💬 “Our outreach program is proof that if you have a group of people who are willing to engage the public enthusiastically while demonstrating that science is interactive, tangible, and fun, then you will find the public excited to listen and left wanting more.”

From launching pumpkins and demonstrating angular momentum to bringing astronomy into K-12 classrooms, these Rocket researchers are proving that science is for everyone. 🚀

We’re so proud of this amazing team of UToledo Rocket Scientists!
