School of Education Summer Interns Participate in Macon County Juneteenth Celebration

Summer interns from the School of Education who are participating in the Alabama State Department’s ASAP Grant program were on hand for the Macon County Tuskegee Juneteenth Celebration yesterday. Due to inclement weather, the event was moved indoors to the Eagle’s Nest and gymnasium at Booker T. Washington High School.

The program was both educational and inspiring. Attendees learned about the significance of Juneteenth and the meaning behind the colors red, white, and blue as symbols of freedom, resilience, and the continuing pursuit of equality.

During the event, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Rice emphasized the important historical role of Crispus Attucks, noting that he was the first American to shed blood in the fight for freedom and independence.

The interns also engaged with local youth by distributing and reading books from the Mobile collection and interacting with Minnie Young Scholars. Their participation helped promote literacy, education, and community engagement.

Despite the change in venue, the celebration was a tremendous success and served as a meaningful reminder of the importance of freedom, education, and the ongoing legacy of Juneteenth. It was truly a great day of learning, service, and community fellowship.

We salute Norma McGowan Jackson for her leadership to bring this community celebration and enlightenment to us each year.

What a wonderful day on the Book Mobile trail!

Today, Tuskegee University School of Education professors, student teacher interns, the Book Mobile driver, a turtle, a goat, and a toy poodle had an amazing time sharing books, stories, songs, and literacy activities with children and families across Macon County.

The Book Mobile made stops at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Carmack’s Grocery, and Washington Chapel AME. Everywhere we went, we were greeted with smiles, excitement, and a love for learning.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting Olivia, a young literacy champion who created a mini library in her community. She was able to take books from the Book Mobile to help restock her library and continue sharing the joy of reading with others. What an inspiring example of community leadership!

Because today’s literacy activities were centered around animals, it was especially meaningful to have a Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine student with us to help introduce and handle our animal guests. The children loved interacting with the turtle, goat, and toy poodle while connecting literacy and learning to the animal theme.

While one planned stop in Shorter was not approved, we have already secured a new location for next week and look forward to continuing our outreach efforts.

Next Friday’s schedule will be posted on Tuesday, and we hope to see you at one of our upcoming stops!

Thank you to everyone who welcomed us today and helped make this such a successful day of literacy, learning, and community engagement, and a special thank you to The Shed LLC, a reptile shop in Tuskegee, for providing the turtle and helping make today’s animal-themed literacy activities even more engaging for our children and families.
