Building upon the chemistry that oysters use in mileslong reefs, scientists have found a way to create cement that is stronger and cures faster. Jonathan Wilker, professor of chemistry and an expert in adhesives and biomimetic materials innovation, has long been interested in formulating new, more sustainable and better materials. Recent work from his research group has included using nature as an inspiration for sustainable, affordable adhesives.

Purdue Research Foundation continues to highlight National Academy of Inventors fellows at Purdue whose collaborative, multidisciplinary research is translated into real-world technologies that benefit society. This week’s fellow is J. Paul Robinson, a Distinguished Professor of Cytometry and SVM Professor of Cytomics in the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Basic Medical Sciences. Robinson’s team invented spectral flow cytometry, the basis of all current commercial instruments and considered one of the most significant technologies in the field of single-cell biological detection using fluorescence.

Father-and-son duo Wade and Alex Johnson both graduated from Purdue with master’s in interdisciplinary engineering without ever stepping foot on campus – albeit 30 years apart. Wade completed his degree via distance learning in the 1990s, and Alex completed his degree online in the 2020s. Though the way they earned their degrees was different, they both feel permanently bonded by the shared experience of being Boilermakers.

Father-son-duo Wade and Alex Johnson got a front row seat to Purdue’s storied history of distance learning — albeit almost 30 years apart.

Discover how Meredith Hall got its name.
Meredith Hall was named in honor of Virginia Claypool Meredith (1848-1936), the first woman to serve on Purdue’s Board of Trustees. She championed better housing for female students and helped establish the university’s home economics department. As we count down to America’s 250th anniversary, we’re celebrating significant moments and people in Purdue’s history. 👉 https://purdue.university/4ucRoHL
