For Purdue Industrial Engineering freshman Caitrin Duffy, engineering is more than solving problems, it's about improving lives.

Inspired by her family and her own experiences navigating healthcare, Duffy hopes to combine her interests in industrial engineering and neurology to make healthcare systems more efficient, accessible, and patient-centered.

Now beginning her Purdue journey in Indianapolis, she's discovering how the principles of industrial engineering can help turn personal experiences into meaningful solutions.

Congratulations to all the teams recognized in the 2026 ShahLab.AI: AI for Social Good competition!

We're especially proud of the Purdue University Edwardson School of Industrial Engineering's contributions, with teams advised by Reem Khir and Nan Kong earning second- and third-place honors, respectively.

Their projects demonstrate how industrial engineering and AI can work together to address real-world challenges, from reducing food waste to improving community responses to the opioid crisis.

Congratulations to the students, advisors and partners working to turn these innovative ideas into real-world impact!

What makes a collaboration succeed—especially when people, robots and AI work together?

Shimon Nof’s latest book, *How Collaborations Succeed*, draws on more than 40 years of research to explore that question, outlining 14 principles for effective collaboration.

The book builds on Purdue PRISM Center research and industry projects, with contributions from many industrial engineering colleagues and students acknowledged throughout.

The book is available online through Purdue Libraries.

The Tompkins Distinguished Professor in Purdue’s Edwardson School of Industrial Engineering is one of just 12 leaders honored this year, recognized for pioneering contributions to healthcare engineering and humanitarian logistics with global societal impact.

Congratulations to Purdue IE’s Brandon Pitts, who has been elected to the Executive Council of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), the world’s largest scientific association for human factors/ergonomics professionals!

Pitts was selected as one of two at-large members in the society’s latest election and will serve a three-year term helping guide the leadership and direction of one of the field’s major professional organizations.
