NIAHD-Public History at WM

NIAHD-Public History at WM The National Institute of American History & Democracy (NIAHD) is a partnership between William & Mary and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

We use an interdisciplinary approach to teach about American History, Material Culture, and Public History. NIAHD sponsors the Pre-College Program in American History for high school students; the Program in Material Culture & Public History for W&M's collegiate students, and the Program for Visiting Students from other colleges and universities who would like to enroll at W&M for one semester or one academic year and participate in the MCPH alongside W&M students.

Meet the faculty for NIAHD summer session #1! Dr. Tyler Goldberger and Dr. Mark Guerci (top) are returning to teach HIST 218: The Road to the US Civil War. They combine teaching and research expertise on the antebellum United States and the Civil War, as well as on public history and memory in civil wars internationally.

Dr. Sarah McCartney, Zoë Packel, and Dr. Elliot Warren (bottom row) will teach HIST 217: The Road to the American Revolution. Dr. McCartney and Dr. Warren have worked respectively on colonial and public history, and the political economy of the Age of Revolutions. We enthusiastically welcome Zoë Packel, our only new instructor this session, whose research expertise on indigenous and environmental history in the course's time period will be a boon for students, and who joins us while dissertating--no easy feat, as all the others could tell us!

NIAHD's instructional model is collaborative: instructors work together on daily site visits and share readings and assignments, but typically separate into smaller sections for reading analysis and discussion. The Session 1 team collectively has over 25 years of experience teaching in NIAHD's place-based model, much of it from the wonderful Drs. McCartney and Guerci, who are also distinguished in that they started with NIAHD once-upon-a-time as William & Mary undergraduates. The team also has many years of teaching experience in the academic year.

In the NIAHD office, we're hard at work with all the nitty-gritty that make the program possible--getting our vans roadtrip-ready, setting up course packets for printing, and taking in all the forms (so many!) that make us ready to welcome you to William and Mary. Please be in touch with questions.

Oh, and: there's just a few days left to apply for Session 2!

Levi is a Pre-College Program alum who will be returning in 2026 for his second summer as a Residential Teaching Assistant. He loves soccer, ice cream, and - of course - history.

He'll be back for Session 1 of the Pre-College Program. You can be part of Session 1 too!

Apply for Session 1 by Friday, May 15.

Session 2 application closes on June 6.

The Pre-College Program in American History is a three-week residential program at William & Mary open to high schoolers from around the world. Students visit museums, battlefields, historic houses, and trade shops. They learn from interpreters, curators, archaeologists, and park rangers. Join NIAHD and do history where it happened!

Seniors, we want to celebrate you and your accomplishments!

We invite you and your guests to join us next Friday:

At 10, we'll meet by the Botetourt Statue for a special Revolutionary Transformations Tour. This tour, developed by Dr. Schroeder's students, shares stories of the Revolutionary War Era campus and the diverse individuals – Loyalist and Patriot, enslaved and free, French and British – who occupied it. The tour lasts approximately an hour, stays in the historic campus area, and has many places to sit along the way.

At 11, we'll gather in Blair 206 for a casual celebration.

At 12, we'll take a group photo of NIAHD seniors.

Join us for the tour, the party, the photo - or all three!

Support NIAHD - Support W&M students learning history where it happened.

NIAHD (The National Institute of American History & Democracy) takes students on site. We travel to museums, historic houses, battlefields, trade shops, national parks, archaeological sites, and archives. We do hands-on research. We talk with locals and professionals. We learn in the field as interns and tour guides.

This also means we incur extra costs and rely on your generosity to educate the next generation of public historians.

It’s !

Support NIAHD - Support students learning history where it happened.

Our Program in Public History & Material Culture takes students on site. We travel to museums, historic houses, battlefields, trade shops, national parks, archaeological sites, and archives. We do hands-on research. We talk with locals and professionals. We learn in the field as interns and tour guides.

This also means we incur extra costs. As a self-funded department, we rely on your generosity to educate the next generation of public historians. Consider:

• $30 covers a course reading packet, printed for students to take on site
• $100 covers a tank of gas, keeping our vans on the road
• $300 covers admission to a significant historic site

Larger donations support financial scholarships for students and sponsor classes taught by professionals. Every amount, big or small, makes a difference!
