About Avalon University School of Medicine

Avalon University School of Medicine has obtained “full accreditation” status by both CAAM-HP and ACCM, and is the only medical school in the Caribbean to receive the maximum years of accreditation by both CAAM-HP and ACCM. Obtaining accreditation demonstrates Avalon’s commitment to providing the highest levels of education to our students and the same l

evel of quality in our business practices. Achieving accreditation is evidence that we are a part of an elite few and have met the rigorous standards of internationally recognized third parties. Founded in 2003, Avalon University School of Medicine (AUSOM) is a private medical school located on the Caribbean island of Curaçao. It is chartered and recognized by the Government of Curaçao, and the charter entitles AUSOM to grant the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree to students who have successfully completed the medical school’s curricular requirements. As a fully accredited medical school, AUSOM adopts a North American curriculum-based medical program, and the graduates are geared for medical practice in the United States and Canada. AUSOM has taken all necessary steps to ensure that its graduates are eligible for the United States and Canadian medical licensure, as its academic team and curriculum focus on the success of its student body. While the emphasis is on student academic success, the administration also focuses on students’ personal needs to make sure both students and parents are comfortable and at ease. AUSOM’s faculty consists of qualified and experienced PhDs and MDs with excellent knowledge of the basic and clinical sciences, making them an integral part of the success of AUSOM graduates. The objective at AUSOM is to ensure that all students obtain sufficient medical knowledge to understand the concepts and principles needed for a successful medical practice. Curaçao is one of the most developed and modern islands in the Caribbean, allowing AUSOM to operate the medical program in an up-to-date and conducive environment for the students, faculty members, and administration. AUSOM takes great pride in ensuring that all students are pointed in the right direction to succeed, and our small class sizes allow AUSOM to provide one-on-one attention from the teachers and more personalized education. Our faculty members provide the leadership needed for a healthy and exciting learning environment, with the goal to mold all students into well-rounded physicians who exhibit the compassion, integrity, and honesty which are essential for medical practice and to serve humanity.

Avalon University School of Medicine was proudly represented at the prestigious International Association for Health Professions Education ( ) Annual Conference by Dean Dr. Sateesh Arja.

The global event served as a collaborative platform to showcase Avalon’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, with the university's leadership delivering impactful presentations and engaging with key international medical organizations.

Throughout the conference, Avalon maintained a highly visible presence. Earlier in the week, Dr. Arja delivered an insightful Short Communication (oral presentation) regarding the "Advancement of Career in Teaching for Faculty of Medicine through Educator Fellowship."

Sustained faculty development is essential to advancing medical education, particularly as medical schools transition toward competency-based curricula. As medical education continues to evolve, empowering educators through longitudinal faculty development programs is an investment that ultimately benefits learners, institutions, and patient care.

Highlighting the institution's regional impact, Dr. Arja also showcased an e-poster titled "Social Accountability Across Caribbean Offshore Medical Schools." Beyond presenting research, he took on an active leadership role by moderating a vibrant Short Communications session on Designing and Planning Learning.

The AMEE Conference also provided vital opportunities for institutional networking. Dr Arja engaged with global health education leaders at the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME), ECFMG, and FAIMER (Intealth). His active participation extended to the AMEE Fellowship Committee Meeting.

Through these comprehensive contributions, continues to drive critical conversations in health professions education and strengthen its role as a leader in cultivating the next generation of global physicians.
