This year, Masters of Teaching students joined Dr Rhonda Di Biase on a 3-week Work Integrated Learning experience based at the The Maldives National University (MNU) which provided students the opportunity to visit a range of schools, observe and teach classes in local island schools, and meet with fellow pre-service students along with MNU lecturers.

Bringing to life our partnership with MNU, our students received a warm welcome from Vice Chancellor Dr. Aishath Shehenaz, and Australian High Commissioner to the Maldives David Jessup, and Dean of the Faculty of Education, Nadhiya Ahmed, who highlighted the importance of strengthening connections between academic communities.

This visit also marks 20 years of Dr Rhonda Di Biase’s engagement with the Maldives education system whose continued work has developed a school greening program and practical teaching resources for local schools.

Thank you to MNU and all Maldivian educators for welcoming our Faculty of Education students into your schools.

Understanding wellbeing begins long before a child enters the classroom, yet the people working with young children don’t always receive the recognition or support their work deserves.

Ahead of World Teachers’ Day celebrations in Victoria, we sat down with Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) alumnus Hayden Rolls to discuss how bringing together wellbeing science, education and entrepreneurship can support early childhood educators and help more children thrive.

After beginning a career in before and after school care, then joining Deloitte’s graduate program, Hayden was drawn to the Centre for Wellbeing Science as an opportunity to deepen his understanding of wellbeing and how it can be directly applied in educational settings.

Connection and community are major contributors to mental health and wellbeing.

In Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, a yarning circle fosters connection and community by providing a safe, equal space for everybody to share stories and knowledge, solve problems and build relationships.

This month, Master of Psychology (Educational and Developmental) students experienced this tradition in action as they spent the afternoon with Murrundindi, Head of the Wurundjeri people.

Through storytelling, a yarning circle, and shared lived experience, UniMelb students learnt that whether supporting a child through a difficult time or creating a more connected classroom, the ability to listen with compassion and build trust are important skills for all future educators and psychologists.

Chloé Hayden, internationally recognised autistic actor and community advocate, joins us to present our final Dean's Lecture for 2026.

For too long, neurodivergent women have been missing from the stories we tell about neurodivergence in research, education and popular culture. That is changing.

Followed by a panel of three leading neurodivergent researchers, Associate Professor Erin H***e, Dr Sarah Timperley and Associate Research Fellow Jess Rowlings, this final Dean's Lecture brings together lived experience, advocacy and research to explore what happens when neurodivergent women are authors of knowledge and agents of change.

Young people who are neurodivergent or have disability can experience social isolation during hospital care.

New UniMelb research, led by Associate Research Fellow Jess Rowlings, has secured National Disability Research Partnership - NDRP funding for ‘Playing Together: Creating moments of social connection in hospital care through digital play.'

This project, supported by researchers from The Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne, will pilot a safe, supported online Minecraft program in partnership with Reframing Autism and The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne.

Building on learnings from Next Level Collaboration, this project aims to develop practical insights into how digital play can foster authentic social connections, strengthen a sense of belonging and support positive engagement.

When governments decide whether to fund a new bike path or create a park in a growing suburb, they typically focus on travel-related benefits—saving travel time, less reliance on cars and avoiding accidents 🚴🏼‍♀️

New research from the University of Melbourne and University of Sydney has placed an economic value on eudaimonic wellbeing, recommending this calculation be recognised in appraisal guidelines for transport policy and planning.

What does it mean to stand with teachers in a rapidly changing world?

This World Teachers' Day marks 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures. For Professor Biesta, championing teachers means recognising them as professionals with the freedom, judgement and agency to shape education itself.

In anticipation of his keynote at UNESCO in Paris, we’re looking back at his conversation on Talking Teaching with Dr Sophie Specjal on the Purpose of Education.
