If Halloween has cast its spell on you this Autumn – spare a quick thought for the 17th century crime busting magicians of Exeter.

These Magnum P*s of the past used magic to crack their cases, tracking down mysteriously missing objects like silver spoons, pewter jugs, hooded capes and coins.

They were paid cash for their services, but several wound up in court accused of witchcraft by over-zealous magistrates!

Just another day as an engineering student 🤩

Earlier this week, our students from across aeronautics, astronautics, mechanical and maritime courses were given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field with QinetiQ 🚁

Working in groups to solve aviation challenges and speaking to industry experts, it was a real insight into the different career pathways available after university!

A simple adjustment to drugs given during septic shock operations could prevent thousands of patients suffering kidney damage.

New research involving our expert Dr Nazrul Islam found that combining medications dobutamine and norepinephrine during surgery can significantly lower the risk of acute kidney injury.

Septic shock has a global death rate as high as 50 per cent and is often triggered by an extreme immune response to an infection. Although emergency surgery usually clears the underlying infection, inflammation and surgical trauma can cause kidney injuries.

Could protection against cold and flu viruses look completely different from traditional vaccines in the future?

Our scientists are developing a new type of white blood cell, called a killer cell, with a pre-programmed memory of how to fight off respiratory diseases.

Prof Salim Khakoo said that, instead of using a weakened pathogen to train the immune system, his team is equipping the cells in the lungs with a memory to target and eliminate viruses immediately after exposure.
