Huge congratulations to Professor Alberto Naveira Garabato who has been elected to the Fellowship of The Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of sciences.

The Fellowship of the Royal Society is one of the highest honours a scientist can achieve and recognises Professor Garabato’s immense contribution to the field of physical oceanography.

He joins the ranks of Stephen Hawking, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Lise Meitner, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and Dorothy Hodgkin.

Alberto said “Throughout my journey in oceanography, I have been immensely lucky to have had the opportunity to work with many gifted and kind collaborators of all career stages. I think of this Fellowship as a shared recognition of their talent and effort.”

Celebrations are in order for our students who recently attended the Target Jobs Undergraduate of the Year Awards 2026!

Special congratulations to second-year law student Cecily Luther, who won the ‘Future Lawyer of the Year’ award. Through her pro bono work at the Global Legal Clinic, where she serves as a committee member, student advisor and McKenzie friend, she has developed an adaptable, collaborative and client-focused approach, which the award recognises and celebrates.

Fellow Southampton nominees Emily Ramsdale and Elijah Coleman were also finalists in their respective categories: ‘Female UGOTY’ and ‘UGOTY Celebrating Neurodiverse Talent’. Each award category is partnered with a leading employer and offers an incredible prize, including places on graduate programmes, summer internships, mentoring opportunities and prize money.

Our researchers worked out how girls’ sweating patterns change as they grow – identifying 14 as a critical age.

From 14, girls sweat more from their torso, and less from hands and feet.

The findings will be used to inform sportswear design for girls and young women, and, ultimately, the aim is to support more girls to stick with or take up sports.

We’re incredibly proud of our postgraduate Business School students who have taken 1st and 3rd place at the Universities Business Challenge Global Masters 🏆

A national competition bringing together teams from across the UK to run a simulated company. We are now the first university to win the Masters competition twice!

Team Nova got to the final by successfully managing a solar energy business, and then created a luxury fragrance brand from scratch in the live final at Liverpool to win first place.
