The Department of Literary and Cultural Studies (DELCS) continued its extension initiative, “Kata-kata maka Pangentoman: Kasuligan Min Kamattoahan”: Bridging Cultures Through Oral Literature and Heritage: A Community-Based Research and Extension Program, bringing together the youth and elders of Brgy. Lakit-Lakit and members of the Jama Mapun community on August 8, 2026.

Led by project proponent Dr. Glenda O. Abdul, alongside DELCS faculty and staff, the activity celebrated indigenous roots and strengthened intercommunity connections through a dynamic exchange of cultural knowledge and traditions.

Cultural bearer Ms. Purita O. Alama of Mapun, together with the Jama Mapun Youth College Association (JAMAYCA), led a demonstration of the Lunsay, a traditional community dance performed on woven bamboo floors, where rhythmic footwork is accompanied by distinctive acappella chants.

More than a demonstration, the activity became a shared cultural experience as participants from both the Jama Mapun community and Brgy. Lakit-Lakit actively engaged in the Lunsay and other cultural performances. Participants learned from one another through movement, rhythm, and participation, transforming the gathering into a meaningful space for cultural exchange.

The celebration also highlighted the grace and artistry of the Igal, with participants from both communities taking part in its performance. Through their shared participation in Lunsay and Igal, the activity demonstrated how cultural traditions can bring communities together while allowing each to appreciate and experience the heritage of the other.

The gathering concluded with a rich storytelling session featuring local fables, allowing elders and cultural bearers to share stories, memories, values, and traditional knowledge with the younger generation.

By carrying these rhythms, movements, and stories forward and by creating spaces where communities can not only witness but actively participate in one another’s cultural traditions, DELCS continues to strengthen intergenerational learning, cultural appreciation, and the preservation of living heritage.

Through initiatives such as Kata-kata maka Pangentoman, the wisdom of our elders remains a guiding rhythm for the youth, keeping our shared cultural identity alive, meaningful, and vibrant for generations to come.
