In a historic milestone in its pursuit of institutional excellence on the global stage, Sorsogon State University (SorSU) has proudly entered the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, earning an overall score of 64.9 out of 100 and securing a 600-800 ranking band among 1,603 participating institutions worldwide.

This marks a significant improvement from the University's performance in the THE University Impact Rankings 2025, where SorSU was placed within the 1001–1500 ranking band among 2,318 participating institutions worldwide, reflecting its growing global impact and strengthened commitment to sustainable development.

Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) assessed, SorSU excelled particularly in SD1 #1 - No Poverty, SDG #2 - Zero Hunger, and SDG #14 - Life Below Water, achieving a rank between 101-200 out of 931, 731, and 561 institutions, respectively.

The University also demonstrated notable ranks on the following Sustainable Goals:
- SDG #5 – Gender Equality, 301-400 out of 1,095 institutions
- SDG #17 – Partnership for the Goals, 401-600 out of 1,610 institutions
- SDG #8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, 601-800 out of 1,003 institutions
- SDG #4 – Quality Education, 801-1,000 out of 1,335 institutions

In reference, The THE Impact Rankings serve as a global performance measure that assesses higher education institutions' contributions toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through their teaching, research, stewardship, and outreach initiatives (Times Higher Education, 2025).

As part of an international engagement and academic leadership mission in Indonesia, Sorsogon State University President Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus visited the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, together with fellow presidents of State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs).

The delegation, led by Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Commissioner Dr. Ricmar P. Aquino, was warmly welcomed by Hon. Glenn Joseph D. Teh, Second Secretary and Consul (Consular and Assistance-to-Nationals) of the Philippine Embassy.

The visit served as an opportunity to strengthen ties between Philippine higher education institutions and diplomatic partners abroad, while fostering meaningful discussions on internationalization, academic collaboration, and educational development.

SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, together with fellow State Universities and Colleges (SUC) presidents in the Bicol Region, attended the investiture ceremony of the first University President of Sulu State University, Prof. Charisma S. Ututalum, CESE, on June 21, 2026, in Maimbung, Sulu.

The Investiture Rites featured the presentation of appointment, the ceremonial donning of the toga, medallion, and cap, as well as the handing over of the academic mace, led by Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis (Chairperson, Commission on Higher Education). CHED Chairperson Agrupis likewise administered the 𝘖𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘖𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘦 to President Ututalum.

Strengthening ties in higher education and advancing institutional excellence, Sorsogon State University (SorSU) and Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology (DEBESMSCAT) formally signed a Memorandum of Agreement on June 18, 2026, at the Bicol University Executive Center, Daraga, Albay.

The agreement aims to strengthen guidance and counseling and library services through inter-institutional collaboration and resource sharing. Under the partnership, SorSU will provide professional assistance through its qualified and licensed Guidance Counselors and Librarians to support DEBESMSCAT’s student support programs, quality assurance initiatives, accreditation activities, and universityhood requirements.

The MOA was signed by SorSU President Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus and DEBESMSCAT SUC President III Dr. Arnel B. Millesca. Witnessing the signing on behalf of SorSU were Dr. Jhonner D. Ricafort, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Atty. Mary Joy C. Bongapat, University Legal Officer.

The partnership reflects the commitment of both institutions to advancing academic excellence, strengthening student support services, and fostering collaboration among State Universities and Colleges in the region. (SorSU PIO)
