The Tarlac State University (TSU) Communicators’ Guild held "SineKatha: A Basic Film Production Seminar-Workshop" on October 24 at the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) Theatre Room, featuring filmmaker and cinematographer Ian Mauricio Cruz as the resource speaker.
The seminar-workshop aimed to introduce aspiring communicators and filmmakers to the fundamentals of film production, providing participants with insights into the filmmaking process and the role of film in storytelling.
Drawing from his industry experience, Cruz emphasized that filmmaking goes beyond creating visuals, serving as a medium for expressing perspectives and telling stories that resonate with audiences. He also highlighted the importance of developing not only technical skills but also the character and mindset needed to pursue a career in the industry.
Communication students enrolled in ELEC 5 (Film Application) were prioritized during registration to help them deepen their understanding of film production and gain practical insights applicable to their academic requirements and future creative endeavors.
Addressing aspiring filmmakers who may be hesitant to pursue their craft, Cruz encouraged them to turn their doubts into action, emphasizing that growth comes from taking chances and learning through experience.
“Ang doubt kasi minsan, nasa isip mo ’yan, pero wala kang action. That’s why kailangan may action, it’s either you win or lose—you just try,” he said.
He further reminded participants not to let uncertainty prevent them from starting, stressing that they do not need to know everything before giving themselves a chance to learn and improve.
Through the seminar-workshop, the Comm Guild underscored the value of film as more than a means of capturing moments, highlighting its potential to build connections, communicate perspectives, and tell stories that leave a lasting impact on audiences.
