This past Tuesday, our TAPPI Student Chapter President, Sophia Halstead, and Vice President, Gavin Knight, were able to attend the Student Leader’s Reception at the President’s House. Last semester we were so honored to receive the Excellence in Career Readiness at the Student Involvement Awards and hope our Student Chapter continues to grow, develop, and learn at events such as these. We hope to see you all at our next meeting!

This past Saturday, we had our first TAPPI Tailgate of the semester for the Auburn vs Vanderbilt game! We are so thankful to the Chemical Engineering Graduate Students for allowing us to co-host this tailgate! We hope to see you at our next event!

TAPPI Student Chapter Kick Off Meeting

At our TAPPI Student Chapter Kick Off Meeting, International Paper hosted and presented on their company. It was an amazing start to this semester and welcome to all our scholarship students and new members of our TAPPI student chapter.

We would like to thank International Paper, specifically: Maggie McCoy Hassani, Mandy Ledkins, and LeeAnne Adams for the wonderful presentation on IP, interviewing tips, and for the food and generous donation to our chapter. Our president Sophia Halstead shared her experience this past summer with International Paper as an Intern in the Finished Products department at their Prattville Mill. Also, our vice president Gavin Knight presented on our TAPPI Student Chapter to all the new students.

We also want to thank Naomi Gehling, Dr. Jiang, and Dr. Josephson who all play key roles in our TAPPI Student Chapter and for the students in the Pulp and Paper program. Also, a special thanks to Jennifer Foster who presented the Pulp and Paper Scholarship Program.

We had a very successful start to the semester and hope to continue to see so many new students at our future meetings.

This past Friday, our TAPPI student chapter had the opportunity to table at the Engineering Student Org. Browse in Brown-Kopel. Students had the chance to talk to members, learn about the Pulp and Paper Industry, and use the paper cart. We are thankful for the opportunity to reach out to more students in engineering and hope to see many new faces at our next meeting!

This past Thursday, our TAPPI student chapter had the pleasure of participating in the Student Involvement Fair! We had an exciting time meeting all the new students on campus and spreading the word about our TAPPI Chapter and the Pulp and Paper Industry. We hope to see many new faces at our upcoming meetings and look forward to this semester!

⚙️ Engineered Experience: Auburn in Action

Where our students turn knowledge into real-world impact

On the job at International Paper in Pensacola, Florida…

Austin Diaz is gaining hands-on experience as a Reliability Engineering Intern, supporting paper machine operations and finished product rolls.

He’s learning how to troubleshoot equipment, understand the role of different rolls in the process, and help reduce downtime after failures—which is key to keeping mills running efficiently.

👉 A highlight of his summer? Visiting a roll shop to inspect damaged equipment and learn how different rolls are used across the mill!

⚙️ His work is helping improve reliability, reduce downtime, and support overall mill performance.
