We are thrilled to celebrate the release of REWRITING AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE: Contesting the Myths of National Culture, edited by Charles L. Davis II, Kathryn E. Holliday, and Joanna Merwood-Salisbury.

This new collection presents a revisionist riposte to traditional narratives of nineteenth-century American architecture. Rather than treating architecture as an apolitical aesthetic expression, the contributors draw on fresh archival research to reframe the built environment as a primary arena where nationhood, race, labor, settler colonialism, and professionalization were actively constructed and contested.

From Indigenous spatial practices to Black institutional building, this volume provides a crucial new lens for scholars and readers in architectural history, American studies, and visual culture.
