For Nadia Khanam, a student at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in the Class of 2029, Baltimore isn’t just a destination. It’s home. Years ago, her dad left Bangladesh and opened a perfume store in Baltimore, building a new for his family life one customer at a time. 💛

Now she’s training to care for the same city that welcomed her family, at a medical school that’s been part of Baltimore’s story since 1807.

Charm City has always been built by people who chose it. We’re proud to call it home, too. 🦀

What a great Mini-Med School session! 🩺

Dr. Carol Shetty kicked things off with a talk on HPV self-swab testing, a simpler way to screen for cervical cancer that can help more people get screened. Early detection makes a real difference in preventing cervical cancer.

Then Dr. Annabel Umeh shared practical tips for managing stress in uncertain times, building resilience, and knowing where to turn for support when life gets hard.

Join us in celebrating Dr. Sharon Henry! 🎉

Dr. Henry, a trauma surgeon at Shock Trauma and professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, has been inducted into the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators, one of the highest honors for teaching in surgery.

She has spent more than 30 years training the next generation of surgeons here in Baltimore, and the trauma courses she has led have shaped how emergency care is taught around the world. A trailblazer throughout her career, she was also the first African American woman inducted into the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma.

Congratulations, Dr. Henry. Your students (past and present) are cheering you on! 👏

In 2022, UMSOM surgeons made history with the first transplant of a genetically modified pig heart into a living patient. Now our researchers are mapping out what comes next. 🫀

In a new review published in Nature, Dr. Raphael Meier, Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin, and colleagues show that advanced diagnostic tests can spot early signs of organ rejection that standard monitoring misses, and they outline a plan to build those tools into future xenotransplant trials.

Catching rejection earlier could mean treatment tailored to each patient, and one day, a reliable new source of organs for the thousands of people waiting for a transplant.

Every fall during Founders Week, University of Maryland, Baltimore honors faculty, staff, and students whose work stands out in education, public service, research, entrepreneurship, and academics.

🎓 Anum Zehra, Student of the Year, is a fourth-year medical student, award-winning cardiology researcher, and founder of KindKin, which supports families of hospitalized children. She also volunteers as a NICU “cuddler”!

💡 Dr. Graeme Woodworth, Entrepreneur of the Year, led the first U.S. trials using focused ultrasound to open the blood-brain barrier for brain tumor treatment, work that led to a new company, Lotus Neuro.

🍎 Dr. Leah Millstein, Educator of the Year, has been teaching at UMSOM since 2008 and leads the Rural-MD Scholars Program, preparing students to care for patients on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
