New ideas in medicine often begin with a challenging question: How can we help patients live longer and better lives?

Dr. Graeme Woodworth and his team at the University of Maryland School of Medicine developed an innovative focused ultrasound approach that helps deliver treatments to brain tumors that were once difficult to reach. Their work is opening new possibilities for patients with glioblastoma and may one day have applications for other neurological diseases.

The challenges facing cybersecurity and artificial intelligence are evolving rapidly.

At UMB, experts and students are helping address those challenges through research, policy analysis, and collaboration with government and industry partners.

Markus Rauschecker, JD, executive director of the University of Maryland Center for Cyber, Health and Hazard Strategies recently led a meeting of the Maryland Cybersecurity Council, which advises lawmakers on issues including cybersecurity, AI, and emerging technologies.

Professor Natalie Ram's research explores genetic privacy, DNA data, and the legal and ethical issues surrounding their use. Her work at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law helps inform conversations about individual rights, public safety, and the responsible use of emerging technologies.

Access to dental care remains a challenge for many Maryland families.

Through the University of Maryland School of Dentistry's Mission of Mercy program, Dr. Ramsay Koury helps bring oral health services to uninsured and underinsured Marylanders while mentoring future dentists committed to serving their communities.

It's one example of how UMB connects education, service, and patient care to make a lasting impact across Maryland.

Meeting Maryland's health care needs starts with preparing the next generation of physicians.

Under the leadership of University of Maryland School of Medicine associate professor Dr. Leah Millstein, the Rural MD Scholars Program gives medical students firsthand experience in rural medicine, connects them with mentors, and helps build pathways to practice in underserved communities on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

It's one example of how UMB is putting knowledge into action to strengthen health care access across our state.

A future physician. A researcher. A community builder.

As a first-generation college graduate and immigrant from Pakistan, 2026 UMB Student of the Year Anum Zehra has already co-authored more than 20 research publications, founded the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Cardiology Interest Group, and launched an initiative supporting families of hospitalized children.

Her approach is simple: pair learning with service and turn knowledge into action.

Before Princaya Sanders crossed the stage as a first-generation college graduate, she was a Baltimore middle school student discovering what her future could hold.

The umbcurescholars was with her along the way.

Through hands-on experiences in anatomy and robotics labs, research presentations to Maryland lawmakers and mentors who stayed in her corner through college, Princaya found opportunities to put her curiosity and determination to work.

Now a University of Maryland Eastern Shore graduate, she plans to pursue graduate study in rehabilitation counseling.

“They really did have my back the entire time. To this day, they still have my back.”

Her journey shows how a university’s impact reaches beyond its campus: helping Maryland students develop their talents, earn degrees and prepare for careers serving others.
