A perfect day for an artist talk! Mary Jo Whitman spoke about what the title ‘Invisible Scars’ means, and how this series of drawings came to be. She has always enjoyed portraiture, and expressing emotion through it. ‘Invisible Scars’ was born of the notion that not all abuse is seen, especially mental and emotional abuse. Whitman took photos of herself modeling the expressions, and uploaded the images into photoshop to alter them into women who don’t actually exist. This allows the individual viewer to see themselves in the artwork. Mary Jo purposely left each piece untitled as she didn’t want to impose her narrative on each drawing, rather she wants every viewer to bring their own story to the piece. She also explained her artistic process in her discussion. Mary Jo Whitman is primarily a sculpture artist, but an injury to her hand forced her back to her drawing roots while she heals. She used graphite pencils to depict the portraits. She also utilized smudge sticks to pick up the dark graphite used in the backgrounds to the shadow the faces. She then took a kneaded eraser to the piece to uncover highlights within her drawings. Thanks Mary Jo for sharing the powerful message behind this series!

The cast includes Morgan Burns as Antonio Salieri, Dusty Wheeler as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Naomi Hoffman as Constanze Weber, Russell Kingdollar as Joseph II, Rudy Fahnbulleh as Count Johann Kilian Von Strack, Wes Kirsch as Count Franz Orsini-Rosenberg, Grace Wheeler as Baron Gottfried Van Swieten, and Jax Murch as Major-Domo. The Venticelli are played by Matt Lawrence, Lydia Hoffman, Sadee Dillon, and Kiera Zambito. Ensemble features Alana Dourie and Bobbijo Nuttal. Sam Beal is Stage Manager, with Abby Williams as Assistant Stage Manager.

Shows are this Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17 at 7:30pm in the Stuart Steiner Theatre! Come support our Theatre students by attending this FREE stage reading.

She will be discussing her latest series of graphite drawings, the subject matter which highlights Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Come to learn more about our local artist, and support this incredible project. This project was made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by GO ART!

An evening reception with the artist will follow from 5:30pm - 7:30pm. Refreshments will be served at both events. We hope to see you there!

We are very excited to exhibit Mary Jo's newest works in the Stuart Steiner Theatre lobby! Invisible Scars was made to highlight Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which takes place each October. The artwork centers around the experiences of survivors, while asking viewers to confront the realities of abuse and the different forms it takes. This exhibit will be on display from October 13 - November 30, 2026 in the Stuart Steiner Theatre lobby. This space is open any time the campus is open, so feel free to stop by. This project was made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by GO ART!
