Architect Loreana Padron will give a Paula G. Manship Endowed Lecture titled “What if the most important building you design already exists? – Architecture, Retrofit and the future of existing buildings” to the College of Art & Design on Monday, November 2 in 103 Julian T. White Hall.

Landscape Architects Design for People in Nature

Pictured: LSU landscape architecture students install seating projects in the Boyce Gallery.

Students designed exterior wooden seating structure for public use, transforming ordinary materials into works out art. Bridging form and function, students employed eco-friendly principles to create custom site-specific designs.

"These materials were designed to guide, instruct, and motivate students throughout the design-build process. The project challenged students to conceive, design, and construct full-scale wooden seating structures while integrating considerations of function, aesthetics, craftsmanship, and human experience," course instructor Kat Hightower said.

"The intent was not only to develop technical construction skills, but also to encourage creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and the development of new design and fabrication habits. The materials helped students navigate the project from conceptual development through construction and final presentation."

The exhibition is on view in Boyce Gallery through November 5, when an open-gallery review and juried awards for Craftsmanship, Interactivity, and Original Design, and a People's Choice Award will be presented.

Landscape Architecture Research Team Investigates Louisiana Park

Assistant professors of landscape architecture Dr. Fabiana Trindade da Silva and Dr. Yao Wang led a case study investigation of Gretna City Park, a project of the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF)’s Case Study Investigation program. Master of landscape architecture students Catherine Frampton and Laura Ramirez assisted the research project, and LSU BLA alumna Amy Norval, CARBO Landscape Architecture, served as the firm liaison.

Abriannah Aiken & Katie Rotman of Feminist Spatial Practices will give a Paula G. Manship Endowed Lecture titled “Civic Threads: Advocating for Design Change” to the College of Art & Design on Wednesday, October 14 at 4:30 p.m. in 103 Julian T. White Hall Auditorium.

Feminist Spatial Practices is a global collective working to foster mutual support and collaboration through workshops, discussions, mentorship, research projects, and making events. Members of FSP cultivate alternative forms of knowledge-sharing that celebrate embodied and equitable modes of practice, building and borrowing from previous generations of radical practitioners. The collective grew out of an archival project, feministspatialpractices.com, which celebrates the different feminisms that have existed across geographies and time, spotlighting practices often overlooked by traditional disciplinary archives.

Drawing inspiration from the collective’s interactive online archive, students participating in the Civic Threads workshop examined and reflected on local histories and present initiatives in Baton Rouge, identifying gaps in civic infrastructure to imagine new approaches to today’s environmental and social challenges. Their proposals took the form of patchwork manifestos, building off the rich tradition of acadian textile craft in Louisiana.
