AXISD, the research group of Dr. Fabiana Trindade da Silva, assistant professor of landscape architecture, exhibited research at the LSU Undergraduate Research Fair. They featured work on coastal flood resilience, examining how nature-based interventions such as mangroves can reduce storm surge and wave damage along vulnerable shorelines.

AXISD is a cross-disciplinary research group in the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture that brings together students and researchers exploring how design can respond to complex environmental challenges. LSU researchers work across scales, from coastal regions to urban streetscapes, combining tools from environmental engineering, landscape architecture, and digital technologies to study resilience, ecosystem-based strategies, and sustainable infrastructure.

"Research moves forward when it leaves the lab and meets the people who might carry it further,” Dr. T. Silva said. “Fairs like this give my students a chance to translate their work for a wider audience, defend their thinking on the spot, and discover that the questions they are chasing overlap with someone else's. Since we are an interdisciplinary group, those encounters tend to open up directions shaped by more than one discipline. It's also often where a new student decides research is something they want to try."

Max Salvant was frustrated. Not by his class schedule or studies but by his notebooks. Three times a week, the LSU architecture student juggled a sketchbook for one class and two or three additional different-sized notebooks for other courses. Toting the unwieldy pile around between classes without....
