As a first-generation student with no family in health care, medical school felt completely out of reach for Natalia Lodl. But after starting a postgrad career in biotech, she realized she couldn't shake her passion for direct patient care, even if making a major career pivot felt like a huge risk.

Joining UC Berkeley Extension’s Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions Program gave Natalia the structured support she needed to prove she had what it takes. Timothy Prisk relied on programming every day but like many scientists and working professionals, his coding skills were picked up ad hoc as projects demanded it.

Seeing this gap in his technical abilities, Timothy decided to build a proper foundation. He enrolled in software development courses at UC Berkeley Extension, taking online classes in C++, Java, and machine learning tools like Spark and TensorFlow, to understand how software works from the ground up.

The payoff was immediate. Timothy built a custom Python program that integrated multiple pieces of hardware into a single real-time control system.

When the pandemic brought Richard Bernius’ sons back home during their freshman year of college, he decided to teach them weekly lessons in personal finance. In the process, he realized something unexpected, he wanted to build a second career out of it.

Even while holding an M.B.A. and years of small-business experience, Rich needed specialized training to make the transition.
