Thank you to Yi Liu, Distinguished AI Scientist at Expedia Group, for joining the ITS Berkeley Transportation Seminar on October 23 to share her insights on AI Agentic Travel!

Liu explored how AI agents are being adopted across industries and how AI-powered travel agents could transform the way people plan and experience travel. She also discussed the challenges of developing these emerging technologies and their potential to reshape the future of the travel industry.

A UC Berkeley alumna, Liu earned her Ph.D. in Air Transportation under the supervision of Professor Mark Hansen. We’re grateful to her for sharing her expertise and perspectives with the ITS Berkeley community!

We are excited to support Julia Griswold, Director of the Safe Transportation Research and Education Center, and her research on Evaluating the Safety Impact of California’s AB 413 “Daylighting Law” Using Near-Miss Conflict Data in Berkeley and Oakland.

This project will use video-based near-miss data to evaluate whether daylighting improves intersection safety and whether painting curbs red makes daylighting zones more effective. The findings will provide evidence to help California cities strengthen street safety and guide the implementation of AB 413.

We are excited to support Berkeley Engineering CEE Berkeley UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design Professor Marta Gonzalez's research on Mobility Science Framework for Integrating Automated Vehicles with Public Transit

This project will develop a data-driven framework for integrating automated vehicles with public transit in San Francisco, considering riders’ travel patterns, demographics and social networks to promote more sustainable and equitable mobility. The project will produce a final report, policy brief with actionable recommendations and stakeholder workshops to support collaboration between transit agencies, AV operators and other transportation stakeholders.

Thank you to Bryant Walker Smith, Associate Professor of USC Joseph F. Rice School of Law and (by courtesy) USC Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing the University of South Carolina, for joining the ITS Berkeley Transportation Seminar on October 16!

In his presentation, “Toward Trustworthy (Automated Driving) Companies,” Smith explored the role of companies in automated vehicle development, highlighting important questions around safety, accountability, corporate responsibility, and individual autonomy. He emphasized the need to treat safety as an ongoing commitment and to build trust in the organizations developing and deploying automated driving technologies.

Thank you to Smith for sharing his expertise and to everyone who joined us for an engaging discussion on the future of automated transportation!

Are you ready for the PATH@40 Symposium? đźš—đź’ˇ

We're excited to announce our The Power to Run the Fleet Panel with Ryan McClain - Contra Costa Transportation Authority, Josie-Dee Li - Einride, Jessie Denver - California Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz), Zinny Weli - RoboDock, and Haitam Laarabi - Berkeley Lab

This panel will cover the changing energy needs as AI and automated fleets are integrated into the transportation landscape, and what that means.

Automated fleets are a new large load arriving at the worst possible time. A robotaxi runs all day, and a full fleet concentrates real new demand in one place. Interconnection studies take years, transformers nearly as long, and transportation is now in the same queue as AI. These vehicles charge several times a day instead of sitting overnight, and somebody has to plug and unplug them in facilities with no drivers. How much power will fleets need, what has to get built, and who gets connected first?

The conversation comes at an important moment for autonomous transportation in California, as regulators, researchers, and industry work to evaluate energy needs.

We are excited to support Alexandre Bayen, Director of , and his research project, Transitioning from the Gas Tax: A Modeling Framework for Road User Charge Design in California.

This project will develop a modeling framework to evaluate Road User Charge (RUC) alternatives as California faces declining fuel-tax revenues amid vehicle electrification and improved fuel efficiency. The research will assess how different RUC designs affect transportation funding, travel behavior, and equity across income groups and regions, helping California identify more sustainable and equitable approaches to funding its transportation system.

Are you ready for the PATH@40 Symposium? đźš—đź’ˇ

We're excited to announce our Workforce and Adapting in a World of AI Panel with Tammy Meehan, The PLUM Catalyst LLC, Michael Flocchini, AC Transit, Henriette Cornet - PhD, Urban Innovate, Lindy Johnson, Contra Costa Transportation Authority, Jamaine Gibson, Amalgamated Transit Union - Intl. Office

This panel will cover the changing face of transportation employment and how AI is impacting how current and future jobs are performed.

Three things are happening at once: The driverless bus is the oldest of them. PATH worked on it with AC Transit at the field station decades ago, and it is still the one nobody agrees on. AI is already inside the agency, recutting runs, predicting which bus breaks next, answering riders. And autonomy is showing up as a contract, where an agency buys AV service for paratransit and thin routes instead of automating its own fleet.

All three change the work. An operator, a union, and a funding agency will talk about what is really being adopted, what happens to the jobs, and what an agency gives up when the service runs on someone else's software.

The conversation comes at an important moment for autonomous transportation in California, as regulators, researchers, and industry work to evaluate current and future workforce needs.

We are excited to support Berkeley Engineering CEE Berkeley Assistant Professor Manxi Wu's research project: BayPass++: Market Design for Incentive-Compatible, Integrated and Equitable Mobility.

This project expands BayPass by developing a framework for determining how an integrated mobility pass should be priced and how revenue should be distributed among transit and other mobility operators. The project will produce a policy brief with recommendations for SFCTA and MTC on pricing, revenue allocation and equity for the next phase of BayPass and its integration with emerging mobility services.

Thank you to Gene Oh, founder and CEO of Tranzito, for presenting “The Smart Curb: How Cities Can Control Their Most Valuable Asset" at the ITS Transportation Seminar on Sept. 25!

Oh explored how cities can rethink one of their most contested transportation resources: the curb. As ride-hailing, deliveries, shared micromobility and autonomous vehicles increase demand for limited curb space, he discussed how dynamic management and a “stacking” approach could allow the same space to serve multiple uses throughout the day.

The seminar also highlighted the role of smart infrastructure, sensing, digital signage and coordinated curb management in creating more adaptable urban transportation networks.

Thank you to Gene Oh and everyone who joined us for the conversation!
