Congratulations to professor Walter Gantz and senior lecturer Anne Ryder, who retired from The Media School at the end of the spring semester.

Gantz joined IU in 1979 and went on to serve as chair of the Department of Telecommunications and associate dean and interim dean of The Media School. He taught generations of students about media processes and effects, research methods, advertising, and media and sports.

Ryder brought nearly three decades of broadcast journalism experience to the classroom, mentoring students through real-world reporting challenges. Her honors include induction into the Indiana Broadcast Hall of Fame, 18 regional Emmy Awards, and five national awards, including two Edward R. Murrow awards.

Thank you, Walt and Anne, for your lasting impact on our students and school. You will be missed!

Professor Walter Gantz and senior lecturer Anne Ryder were heavily involved in leaving an impact on the community.

Through a $100,000 grant from the Hearst Foundations awarded to IU’s student media at The Media School, a four-year media reporting fellowship initiative helps to provide community reporting throughout southern Indiana, addressing the region’s growing news deserts and underserved communities.

Madelyn Hanes, BAJ’26, was selected as the program’s first fellow during the inaugural term in the fall where she reported on and connected with the Ellettsville community. The spring semester fellows — Natalia Nelson, Edith Morales, and Elizabeth Schuth — focused on immigration in Jackson County. All three speak Spanish and used skills in news writing, video production, and still photography to report on the area’s growing Latin American communities.

The program will continue to welcome several additional fellows throughout the remainder of the grant period.

The fellowship supported one reporter in the fall semester and three reporters in the spring, with plans to increase to as many as five as the project grows.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Media School students received $346,100 in scholarships for the 2026-27 academic year!

These gifts mean more than financial support to the 126 students who received them. They help students focus on coursework, reporting, creative projects, internships, research, and student media with greater freedom to make the most of their time at IU as they prepare for what comes next.

Recipients were recognized for their outstanding role in academics and media.

What an incredible outpouring of support for our undergraduates on Friday at the commencement celebration held at the IU Auditorium. Family, loved ones, friends, faculty, and staff filled the room to celebrate and send off The Media School's largest graduating class.

From the stage, the view said it all: a community showing up in a big way for our students. Thank you to everyone who applauded, encouraged, mentored, taught, and supported our students along the way!

Nate Soco, BAJ’26, shares how he got his start in production working for WTIU Public Television assembling interview transcripts, assisting with video shoots, capturing b-roll, and serving on the production crew during a recording session for the original score of a documentary.

"Sitting in the bed of a moving truck, while buffalo tried to eat the camera, was not something I expected when I started at WTIU, but it is a moment I will never forget."
