📽️ Movie music? In my Boise Chamber Music Series?

In his legendary film "Barry Lyndon," director Stanley Kubrick used the slow movement of Schubert's Piano Trio No. 2 in E-Flat Major as the soundscape for pivotal moments in Barry's life.

Other films like "The Hunger," "Crimson Tide," and the HBO miniseries "John Adams" have also used the piano trio for their soundtracks.

What is it about Schubert's chamber masterpiece that draws filmmakers back, again and again? Find out at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6 with the The Horszowski Trio and Boise Chamber Music Series.

For Immediate Release
The Boise Chamber Music Series Presents the Horszowski Trio
Friday, Nov. 6, 2026 7:30 pm
Location: Morrison Center Recital Hall (C200)
The second concert of the 2026-27 BCMS season features The Horszowski Trio: Rieko Aizawa, piano; Jesse Mills, violin; and Ole Akahoshi, cello; repeated, proven winners with the BCMS audience. Giving performances that are “lithe, persuasive” (The New York Times), “eloquent and enthralling” (The Boston Globe), and described as “the most compelling American group to come on the scene” (The New Yorker), the Horszowski Trio quickly became a vital force in the international chamber music world. Since their debut performance in New York City in 2011, they have toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, the Far East, and India, traversing the extensive oeuvre of traditional piano trio repertoire and introducing audiences to new music that they have commissioned and premiered.
For their Boise concert, we look forward to Ravel’s only Piano Trio (1914), short miniatures by Schoenberg, and Schubert’s magnum second Piano Trio No.2 in E-flat major D.929, op.100.
For single tickets ($40) to this concert, please contact [email protected] as soon as possible.

Convenient hourly public parking for non-Boise State parking permit holders attending Music Department events is available just south of the Morrison Center in the Brady Street Garage for $3.25 per hour. Cash and credit/debit cards are accepted at the kiosk.

Imogen Holst, daughter of the composer behind "The Planets," appeared on the BBC Radio program Desert Island Discs in 1972 and said: "I'm not really a composer."

A humble statement for the author of over 200 original works and arrangements, including a Phantasy Quartet you can hear from the Aeolus String Quartet.

Hear Holst on Friday, Sept. 25 at the Boise Chamber Music Series. Email [email protected] for tickets.

How do you write your autobiography without using a single word? Ask Bedřich Smetana.

The Czech composer's first string quartet, subtitled "From My Life," is autobiographic. It calls to forth elements from Smetana's life and Czech background. Smetana put his own tinnitus on the page with a high E natural from the first violin in the last movement.

Hear Smetana's string quartet on Friday, Sept. 25 with the Aeolus String Quartet in their Boise return. Email [email protected] for tickets.

I'm not saying you won't love hearing Grażyna Bacewicz’s Third String Quartet on Sept. 25's concert by the Aeolus Quartet without special preparation, but I am saying that there are various depths to love, and if you will give this a listen a time or two, the depth of your affection (and recognition) will be beautifully enhanced:

It was an all-saxophones--all-the-time finish to the Boise Chamber Music Series last night. An extraordinary concert of contemporary saxophone quartet music, delivered by the hard-driving Kenari Quartet, was capped by a heart-rending performance of David Maslanka's "The Soul is Here for Its Own Joy." Seen here, just some of the 16 Boise State Dept. of Music saxophone students who participated in the quartet master class on Thursday, with their BSU sax professor Dr. Matthew Castner.
