Congratulations to the 2026 Opus Prize Laureate: The Rev. Vitaliy Novak, C.M., founder of Depaul Ukraine!

The Opus Prize Foundation awarded $1 million to Depaul Ukraine to advance its humanitarian work serving people in Ukraine. Fr. Novak was unable to attend Thursday's ceremony because he is ministering to soldiers serving in the Ukrainian armed forces. Anna Skoryk, CEO of Depaul Ukraine, accepted the honor on his behalf.

Fr. Novak founded Depaul Ukraine in 2007 to support children experiencing homelessness. The organization expanded its mission dramatically following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, providing humanitarian assistance, emergency relief and support for displaced families.

Today, DePaul announces that a $30 million gift from alumni Robert Clifford (BUS ’73, JD ’76, LLD ’03) and Joan Clifford (COE ’72) will usher in a new era for the College of Law. The gift will expand opportunities for students and faculty and elevate DePaul University College of Law's national reputation for excellence in legal education. In recognition of the gift, the college will be renamed the Robert A. Clifford College of Law.

Robert Clifford is celebrating his 50th reunion this month with College of Law classmates. He is a DePaul Life Trustee, prominent Chicago trial lawyer, and founder and senior partner of Clifford Law Offices PC, a premier Chicago law firm concentrating in personal injury and wrongful death litigation.

“This extraordinary gift honors Bob’s distinguished career while shaping the future of legal education at DePaul for generations to come,” said DePaul President Robert L. Manuel. “It builds on the College of Law’s proud history and strengthens its position as a leader in preparing exceptional lawyers who lead with integrity, serve their communities and advance justice. I am deeply grateful to Bob and Joan for their remarkable generosity, their longstanding partnership and their unwavering belief in DePaul’s Catholic and Vincentian mission.”

At DePaul, Chicago is part of how you learn.

For freshmen taking Phil Meyers’ Summer Sports in Chicago class, that meant spending part of their Chicago Quarter Immersion Week at the 16-inch Chicago Softball Hall of Fame joined by professionals from the Chicago Bears. As part of DePaul’s Layered-Learning approach, students connect classroom insights with off-campus immersions to explore a game woven into the city’s history and culture. As the class learned about Chicago softball, students got a chance to ask Bears staff members how their own academic interests show up in the industry.

Today, we remember Todd Beamer (BUS ’93) and honor his legacy on the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

As a passenger aboard United Airlines Flight 93, Todd demonstrated remarkable courage in the face of unimaginable circumstances. His words, “Let’s roll,” became an enduring symbol of selflessness and strength.

His impact continues through the Todd M. Beamer Memorial Scholarship, which supports students in DePaul’s Kellstadt Graduate School of Business.

We remember Todd and all those whose lives were lost that day.

DePaul is proud to host the 2026 Opus Prize, a prestigious award honoring faith-based leaders whose work addresses some of the world's most persistent social challenges.

The finalists for this year’s prize are:
• Nontsasa Nyovane, Founder and executive director of Siyakhathala (“We Care”) in Cape Town, South Africa, caring for orphans and survivors of abuse through after-school programs, parenting workshops and job training.
• The Rev. Vitaliy Novak, C.M., Founder of Depaul Ukraine, providing humanitarian relief to those displaced by war, and serving as a frontline chaplain in the Ukrainian Air Force.
• The Rev. David Kelly, C.PP.S., Executive director of Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation, leading restorative justice work with youth and families affected by violence right here in Chicago.

Supported by the Opus Prize Foundation, the prize awards $1 million for the laureate and two $100,000 awards for finalists to support their organizations. This year's theme, "Uplifting the Dignity of All," reflects our Vincentian mission on a global stage.

We loved seeing Tom Skilling explore Cinespace Chicago Film Studios and stopping in to check out DePaul’s stages and sets at Cinespace!

There’s something special about being immersed in the creative community of the “Hollywood of the Midwest.” The DePaul University School of Cinematic Arts provides students with a unique opportunity to learn on a working production lot where many acclaimed Chicago-based shows and movies are filmed. DePaul students gain real-world hands-on experience while developing technical and storytelling skills to prepare for careers in film and television. 🎬

WGN's Tom Skilling got a behind-the-scenes look at Cinespace Chicago, known as 'The Hollywood of the Midwest.' It spans 60 acres, includes 51 sound stages, and employs thousands of people.
