✨ Impact Spotlight ✨

➡️ This week, we’re spotlighting Shalom Kifilemariam, who is earning his bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting at UNT. This year, he was selected to be a UNT Kuehne Speaker Series Scholar, receiving one of UNT’s most significant scholarships and opening the door to opportunity.

“Receiving the Kuehne Speaker Series Scholarship was exciting for me because it meant that UNT believed in me, I was doing the right things and I was on the right path. This scholarship allowed me to do everything — explore a lot more, focus on my studies and my career. It lifted a lot of burden for my family and myself and allowed me to be free and do the things I want to do in my life and my career.”

🟢 Why I Give 🟢

Meet Cynthia Hawkins-Bowland ('69), a retired educator who found her calling when she began working in special education. Now, through a planned gift to UNT, she and her husband, John, are helping ensure future educators have the support they need to answer their own calling to teach.

“I enjoyed my time at North Texas so much, though financially it was difficult. I would like my gift to ease the burden and worry for other students going into special education. There are also adult learners returning to school, and I hope this gift helps them as well. I just hope to help students who are going into special education persevere and continue to graduation. We need more certified career teachers — teaching is a career.”

❇️ Driven by a commitment to student success, Ernest Martinez ('11) and fellow founding members of the UNT Latinx Alumni Network made it their mission to fully endow the Dr. Victor Rodriguez Endowed Scholarship. Thanks to their leadership and the generosity of fellow alumni and donors, that mission is now accomplished, creating new opportunities for first-generation students from underserved communities. ✨
