Since earning her dental hygiene degree from Pacific University, Jessica Scruggs DHS ’09 has used her healthcare expertise for the greater good, particularly as a U.S. Public Health Service officer. But at her core, she's still the practitioner that she learned to be at Pacific.

How do you teach teenagers to embrace the power of poetry? You just have to convince them that it’s around them every day.

That’s the first lesson that Nancy Miller Gomez MFA ’17 teaches as part of Rising Voices, a poetry-writing program that she developed for high schools in and around Santa Cruz, California, as part of her two-year term as Santa Cruz County’s poet laureate.

Now in its second year, Rising Voices provides instruction on writing and appreciating poetry to 14 high schools in conjunction with the Santa Cruz County Department of Education. In its first year, 360 students participated in the program.

Over Homecoming weekend, Pacific University also celebrated the opening reception for Japanese-American artist mai ide's Boxed Woman — her show incorporating salvaged fabric and Sashiko stitching to explore cultural intersectionality, race and gender, as well as the experience of being perceived as an 'other' or 'forever foreigner' in the U.S.

Congratulations to our Cawein Gallery for such a fantastic opening, and make sure to check out the show running through November 16 in Forest Grove.

Pacific University Professor of Public Health Rebecca Schoon has spent over a decade researching universal healthcare. Now, she has the chance to help develop the first program of its kind in the United States.

Rebecca has been appointed to Oregon’s Universal Health Plan Governance Board, charged with developing a universal healthcare system for the state. She will join the board in January 2027, as it prepares to deliver the first draft of its plan to the Oregon Legislature. If approved, the plan could be referred to voters sometime in 2028.

While the appointment allows Rebecca to be involved in increasing access to healthcare for thousands of Oregonians, it also allows her to demonstrate to her Pacific students that the passion of faculty members is not confined to the classroom.

“I think anytime students see real systematic change or policy change in action, it means a lot to them to be able to study it. It’s not just in a book or abstract,” she says. “I think it is motivating and inspiring for students to see professors that are active in our communities and using the knowledge that we’ve built to contribute to those communities.”
