UPDATE
Bald eagle #1426 (John Jacob) from Schoharie County, NY remains hospitalized. While his wing fracture was healing, he developed a serious bacterial infection that was highly resistant to antibiotics. His treatment required additional surgeries, as well as a drug that had not been used in birds before. Thankfully, he experienced only mild temporary side effects with the new treatment, and it worked well to cure the infection.
John Jacob will need to stay a little while longer for additional monitoring and testing to be sure he is in excellent health before being transferred to rehabilitation. Throughout his long stay at the Swanson Wildlife Hospital, he has remained resilient and tenacious. He has had 16 bald eagle neighbors share his hospital room since July. He prefers rat over salmon for his meals, and thoroughly enjoys being misted with a spray bottle each morning - turning around on his perch and lifting his wings to be sure that all areas get wet. Thank you for your continued good thoughts and well wishes for John Jacob as he prepares for the next step of his recovery journey!
