⭐️ALUM SPOTLIGHT⭐️ Meet Le Hui Ch'ng, a talented alumna whose journey from UL to the University of Oklahoma is a testament to the power of mentorship and hard work. Ms. Ch’ng graduated with a Master of Music in Piano Performance & Pedagogy in 2024. She credits her transformative experiences at UL—ranging from performing in recitals to receiving invaluable guidance from professors like Dr. Lim—for shaping her path to a Doctorate in Piano Performance & Pedagogy. Le Hui’s achievements, including winning 1st Prize in the Frank Hanley Piano Competition and being named Outstanding Master’s Graduate, reflect her dedication and the collaborative environment at UL. We’re proud to see her thriving in her professional and academic journey!

Please join us on Tuesday, November 26 at 7pm for a free concert by the UL Symphony Orchestra in Angelle Hall Auditorium. The program will include selections from Aaron Copland's popular and powerful Rodeo (Buckaroo Holiday, Corral Nocturne, Hoe-Down). UL Piano Professor Chee Hyeon Choi will be the featured soloist for Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 2.

Chee Hyeon Choi, a Korean American pianist and educator, is currently an assistant professor of piano and piano pedagogy at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She has performed solos and ensembles at prestigious venues including the Music by Women International Festival, Pablo Center at the Confluence, Central Florida Composers Forum, Composers in Asia, College Music Society, and the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall. She also was the principal keyboardist with the Heartland Festival Orchestra and the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Choi is an active clinician and presenter, featured on national and international platforms including the College Music Society, Music Teachers National Association, Association for Technology in Music Instruction. She was invited as the keynote speaker for the Gimhae International Music Symposium. Her accomplishments have been recognized with the Teacher of the Year award by the Illinois State Music Teachers Association where she served as the VP and President-Elect. She directs the UL Piano Institute and is on the faculty member of the Illinois Summer Youth Music program.

Copland captured the spirit of the American West in many of his works. Rodeo is an excellent example. This work was originally a ballet score for Agnes de Mille, American dancer and choreographer for the company Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Its setting takes place in western America where a cowgirl tries to gain the affection of a man by outdoing the other men at their own craft. The four dance episodes contain elements of ragtime, old American tunes, square dance melodies and the sound of fiddles tuning. The suite concludes with a rousing “Hoe Down” that will have your feet tapping.
