Loads of Global Economic Data

The International Monetary Fund is a partnership of 191 countries that works to achieve sustainable growth and prosperity for all of its members. The site is divided into eight major sections accessible through persistent links at the top of each page. Each section has its own extensive drop-down menu. Economic data available from the IMF Data Portal can be accessed from the “Data” tab at the top of any page. Users can enter keyword searches or explore the data explorer tool, datasets, or review the data release calendar browsable by topic or data set filter. Content is added regularly, with daily updates for some sections. This is an excellent source of comparative global economic data.

A Global Health Resource

The Global Health Policy resource page is compiled and maintained by the Kaiser Foundation, providing the latest data and information on the U.S. role in global health and the broader global health policy landscape. Site includes access to facts and analysis on a wide range of policy issues and public programs, public opinion and survey research on Americans’ attitudes, knowledge, and experiences with the health care system, national news coverage of health issues, and global and national health data. Excellent source of policy analysis and data concerning U.S. government funding participation in global health.

Advocating for Democracy and the Technology

The Center for Democracy and Technology is a nonpartisan, nonprofit advocacy organization that promotes policies, laws, and technical designs that empower people to use technology for good, advocating for online platforms to be transparent, accountable, and respect human rights, curtailing government censorship, enable all people to access and share information of their choosing, and fighting against unwarranted surveillance by government. Established in 1994, the organization provides access to collections of resources grouped by key issues, latest news and insights gathered from various outside sources, and collections of topical resources, ranging from online advertising to content moderation systems in the global south. An excellent resource for students seeking insight into the relationship between democratic values and the policy challenges related to past, present, and emerging technologies.

A House of Freedom

Freedom House was founded in 1941 to rally policymakers and a broadly isolationist American public around the fight against N**i Germany. In the decades since, the organization has published research on more than 200 countries and territories, including in-depth assessments on political rights and civil liberties (Freedom in the World), a definitive study on internet freedom (Freedom on the Net), and research on the tactics used by authoritarians to silence their critics or expand their influence abroad (Transnational Repression). The site provides access to these reports as well as a “Freedom Map” that visualizes tracking of fundamental freedoms and rights in 208 countries and territories worldwide and “Election Watch for the Digital Age” that tracks the intersection of elections, internet platforms, and human rights around the world.

Freedom House is founded on the core conviction that freedom flourishes in democratic nations where governments are accountable to their people.

Watching European States

Statewatch is an advocacy organization consisting of activists, researchers, lawyers, and journalists that produces and promotes critical research, policy analysis, and investigative journalism exposing state power and informing dissent across Europe and its borders. It promotes an open Europe of democracy, civil liberties, personal and political rights, free movement, freedom of information, equality, and diversity by monitoring, analyzing, and exposing state activity that threatens civil liberties, human rights and democratic standards in order to inform and enable a culture of diversity, debate and dissent. Fight on, Euro-style.

The EU Commission has broken the law pursuing a police cooperation agreement with Israel that may itself breach international law.

Documenting Internet Censorship

The Open Observatory of Network Interference is a non-profit free software project that aims to empower decentralized efforts in documenting internet censorship around the world. Its mission is to ensure a free and open internet by increasing transparency of internet censorship around the world for the purpose of helping create and defend an internet where human rights – particularly freedom of expression and access to information – are promoted and protected around the world. The Network supports OONI Explorer, an open data resource on internet censorship around the world. It hosts more than a billion OONI measurements collected from 241 countries and territories since 2012.

The Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI) is a global community measuring internet censorship around the world. Run OONI Probe to detect internet censorship. Use OONI Explorer to track internet censorship worldwide in near real-time.

Mapping Global Power Plants

Maintained by the World Resources Institute, the Global Power Plant Database is a comprehensive, open source database of power plants around the world. It centralizes power plant data to make it easier to navigate, compare, and draw insights for one’s own analysis. The database covers approximately 30,000 power plants from 164 countries and includes thermal plants (e.g., coal, gas, oil, nuclear, biomass, waste, geothermal) and renewables (e.g., hydro, wind, solar). Each power plant is geolocated, and entries contain information on plant capacity, generation, ownership, and fuel type.

European-based Catalogue of Data

The Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives Data Catalogue, in collaboration with the European Research Infrastructure Consortium, offers extensive, integrated, and sustainable data services to the social sciences, uniting social science data archives across Europe. Currently, the site offers access to more than 40,000 social sciences data sets gathered from over twenty European countries. The presented data includes a range of data types, such as quantitative, qualitative or mixed-modes data, covering both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, as well as recently collected and historical data

Resources for Investigative Journalists [and Others]

The Global Investigative Journalism Network serves as an international hub for the world’s investigative reporters. It is comprised of 263 nonprofit journalism organizations in 97 countries. Its mission is to support investigative journalism around the world , with special attention to those from repressive regimes and marginalized communities. The free online Resource Center contains over a thousand tip sheets, videos, and reporting guides that can be used by students and researchers as resources for studying a variety of global issue topics.

GIJN is an international association of nonprofit organizations that support, promote, and produce investigative journalism. GIJN hosts conferences and provides training, resources, and consulting.
