Meet our Top-Notch Trojan, Amoreena Aspenwall-Fredin!

I've been with Bovard College and USC Online since 2018. As a Senior Instructional Technologist, my main role is to create online courses in our Learning Management System from documents prepared by the Instructional Design team. I also lead and support our digital accessibility efforts. I've designed tools, templates, and workflows that increase efficiency while reducing errors. Collaborating with team members and other groups to solve problems is the most enjoyable part of my work. The question always on my mind is, "How can we make this better?"

If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be this: Even if you think you can't do it, try it anyway. You'll surprise yourself, because you are more capable than you think!

Liz Phillips nominated Amoreena for embodying the Unifying Value of Community! Here’s what Liz had to say: “Amoreena Aspenwall-Fredin embodies USC’s Unifying Value of Community by fostering belonging, strengthening shared responsibility, and bringing people together across roles and perspectives. She actively builds bridges across units and creates space for conversation, listens carefully, and helps colleagues navigate differences with professionalism and care.

Beyond her primary responsibilities, Amoreena selflessly shares her time and expertise to support colleagues on other teams, strengthening collaboration and cultivating a culture where multiple viewpoints are welcomed and no one works in isolation. Through her commitment to connection, generosity, and respectful exchange, she strengthens trust and advances USC’s mission by helping build a vibrant academic community grounded in belonging and shared purpose.”

Meet our Top-Notch Trojan, Daniel Nation!

Hi there! My name’s Daniel. I’ve been in the School of Gerontology for three years, where I’m a Professor in Gerontology and in the Keck School of Medicine. I enjoy most my research on dementia and working with students and post-docs on our studies. What I love about working at USC is the university’s commitment to excellence.

Basant Lashin nominated Daniel for embodying the Unifying Value of Open Communication! Here’s what Basant had to say: “Dr. Daniel Nation’s door is always open, and I mean that literally. No matter how busy he is, he makes time for his team. As a postdoc in his lab, I’ve always felt comfortable walking in, asking questions, and sharing concerns without any hesitation.

What I appreciate most is how he genuinely listens, welcomes different opinions, and never makes you feel dismissed, even when your perspective differs from his own. He creates a space where honest conversations happen naturally, and he has a wonderful way of pushing us to grow…I feel fortunate to work with someone who leads with such warmth and openness.”

Meet our Top-Notch Trojan, Gabriela Ibarra!

I have been with USC for four years, where I’m currently a Home Visitor within the School For Early Childhood Education. My main responsibilities are to support the development of infants and toddlers by partnering with families through regular home visits. I provide guidance on child development, model age-appropriate learning activities, and help parents strengthen their role as their child’s first teacher. I also support pregnant participants by providing education on prenatal health, preparing for childbirth, and promoting healthy parent-child bonding from the beginning. I monitor developmental progress, connect families to community resources, and support overall family well-being.

I'm passionate about helping others feel supported. I enjoy being someone who brings patience, structure, and a sense of calm into the homes of the families on my caseload. Whether it's through guidance or simply showing up consistently, I take pride in making a positive impact, building trust with families, and creating a supportive space where families feel comfortable and encouraged.

Maria Perez-DeLuna nominated Gabriela for embodying the Unifying Value of Well-being! Here’s what Maria had to say: “Gabriela demonstrates a strong commitment to the USC community and its core values through her dedication to promoting the well-being of the families she serves. Through home visiting services, she provides guidance, support, and resources that empower families to create healthy and nurturing environments for their children. Gabriela approaches her work with compassion, respect, and integrity, ensuring that families feel valued and supported. Her commitment reflects USC’s values of service, community, and excellence.”
