FIU Asian Studies Program The Asian Studies Program at Florida International University has grown from a glint in the eye to a major, continually growing, program.

Florida International University
School of International and Public Affairs
https://www.facebook.com/FIUAsianStudiesAFA
https://www.instagram.com/fiuasianstudies/ This has been accomplished with the support of former President Maidique and a number of important administrators, committed faculty and staff, and the enthusiastic interest of students. Starting with a small certificate program that did not have a language requirement, we now have a vigorous program of Chinese and Japanese studies that supports the Master's and Bachelor's degree as well as a variety of advanced certificates and a minor. Through networking with K-12 schools, businesses, and community organizations, Asian Studies participates in a wide range of outreach activities. The building blocks for the growth of Asian Studies have been internal support matched by external grants and fund raising. Asian Studies faculty and curriculum development that provides outstanding courses for students had been created through funding from the Department of Education (including Title VI), the Japan Foundation (including the Center for Global Partnership), the National Endowment of the Humanities, and the Freeman Foundation, among others. A small but steady influx from Fu Foundation support has been crucial to sending students to Asia on a regular basis. Our series of lectures, workshops, events, and performances have been an important factor in invigorating academic excellence and fostering opportunities for the interaction of students with leading scholars in Asian Studies from throughout the world including East Asia, South Asia, Europe, and Latin America. We are proud to sponsor the Southern Japan Seminar which is one of many conferences produced by Asian Studies over the last decade that contributes to the peer-reviewed journal Japan Studies Review.

Today, the Asian Studies Program was honored to co-sponsor an insightful talk by Dr. Erin Chung, titled “Rethinking the Regime Effect on Migration Governance: Immigration, Democracy, and Developmentalism in East Asia.”
Building on the concept of the “developmental migration state” framework, Dr. Chung argued that migration governance in East Asia is better understood through the enduring centrality of developmentalism rather than regime type alone.
We had a fantastic turnout, including about 15 faculty members and students who joined us virtually. The audience was highly engaged, leading to a thoughtful and dynamic Q&A session.
A sincere thank you to the Department of Politics and International Relations for hosting this event, and to the Ruth K. & Shepard Broad Distinguished Lecture Series and the Dorothea Green Lecture Series for co-sponsoring. Finally, thank you to everyone who attended—both in person and online—and a special thank you to Dr. Chung for sharing her deep expertise and illuminating perspectives on East Asian politics and society!

What an unforgettable afternoon at Florida International University! 🌟

Yesterday, the FIU Asian Studies Program hosted “The Korean Dynamic: Economic Might, Civil Society and the Korean Wave in the 21st Century.” We were honored to have Dean Shlomi Dinar and Consul General Joon Ho Lee deliver warm opening remarks to a packed room!

Our incredible panelists—Dr. Erin Aeran Chung, Dr. Ji Yeon (Jean) Hong, and Mr. Steve Suh—shared brilliant scholarly insights, compelling personal stories, and plenty of warmth and humor. The audience’s energy was unmatched—applause after every single response created such a special atmosphere in the room! 👏👏
Moderated by Program Director Dr. Jin (Julie) Zeng, the panel discussion seamlessly navigated Korea’s economic trajectory, demographic trends, and global cultural impact, covering remarkable ground in 75 minutes. We wrapped up the discussion with a delightful luncheon with our distinguished guests and partners.

Thank you to the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Atlanta, the Ruth K. & Shepard Broad Lecture Series, the Dorothea Green Lecture Series, and everyone who joined us to make this event a resounding success! 🇰🇷✨
