Alumna Amanda Blom’s path to occupational therapy was a natural continuation of the care she was already providing. With an undergraduate degree in rehabilitation psychology and a job where she facilitated play therapy for children, pursuing OT wasn’t a far stretch.

“Healthcare is always changing and sometimes that’s a hard skill to learn, but I think the program did a great job for teaching us to expect the unexpected,” Blom said.

Translational Experience in Drug Discovery and Development (known as TED³), a course for medicinal chemistry graduate students, offers a true-to-life simulation of the drug development pipeline, a process that’s not often replicated in an academic setting. In small groups, i.e., "start-up companies," students research a molecular target and a therapeutic application before developing testing procedures. Their tests yield a data portfolio with sometimes conflicting results, reflecting the challenges they might face in an authentic drug development environment.

“It’s rare for medicinal chemistry programs around the country to offer this sort of active learning opportunity,” said Dr. Adam Duerfeldt, who designed the course. “Based on my discussions with faculty at other institutions, I’m pretty confident that there’s not another course like this in [the region].”
