Good food, good fun and a little break from the grind of the semester.

A great public research university should welcome hard questions, open debate and differing viewpoints.

This week, the University of Oklahoma marks its sixth annual Free Speech Week, joining institutions across the country in honoring the freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment.

In the video below, President Joseph Harroz, Jr. explains why these principles are central to who we are, and why the freedom to share our views comes with the responsibility to respect others’ right to do the same.

At OU, our job isn’t to tell students what to think. It’s to teach them how to think. To challenge ideas, engage with different perspectives, and prepare to lead beyond our campuses. That’s why OU adopted the Chicago Statement on Freedom of Expression, and why we remain committed to being a place where free speech flourishes and hate has no home.

Join us Thursday, Oct. 22, for this year’s keynote, “Why Free Speech Matters – To Us All,” with David Cole, Georgetown University Law professor and former National Legal Director of the ACLU.
