The mission of Holy Names University continues through The Legacy Funds of Holy Names University and its Scholarship Program .

For over 150 years, Holy Names University served as a beacon of faith, service, and academic excellence in Oakland, California. Today, that mission lives on through the Legacy Funds of HNU, which provides scholarships with a priority to local Oakland and Bay Area students.

The Fall 2026 cycle of The Legacy Funds of HNU Scholarship Program has launched.

Scholarship awards start at $10,000 to help eligible Bay Area students pursue their higher education goals while carrying forward a legacy rooted in education, social justice, and community service.

Applicants must meet residency, financial need, academic, and other program requirements.

*Voices of The Legacy Funds of HNU* is our new interview series celebrating the people whose lives and service define our mission. And our very first story belongs to Sister Carol Sellman, SNJM.

A 1969 Holy Names University alumna, Sister Carol devoted 42 remarkable years to HNU — ultimately serving as Immediate Past President of The Legacy Funds of HNU (LFHNU). In this candid conversation with LFHNU CEO Soraya Wright (HNU Class of 1985), Sister Carol opens up about what first drew her to Holy Names, her proudest memories from more than four decades of service, and why she believes LFHNU represents a powerful new beginning.

"I am consoled by the fact that we were able to utilize the endowment to continue the kind of work that the Sisters and the university have done for over 150 years," she shared.

Her story is a testament to what happens when purpose meets perseverance. We hope it inspires you as much as it inspires us.
