Talk description and details:

Ireland is blessed with an abundance of rainfall and a diversity of habitat that give the Emerald Isle a rich and diverse abundance of mycota. This presentation will discuss the mushrooms found in the woodlands, demesnes, burrens, grasslands, and heaths of Ireland and the burgeoning mycological milieu in Ireland today.

CONGRATULATIONS Tobey Colston!

Toby passed her qual exams!!! She’s in her second year in the MCB dept. at UCB, on track to get her PhD.

Tobey is a brilliant student who after raising children while traveling with her Marine husband, returned to school first at Laney College, then in the Merritt College Program Merritt Microscopy (where she was known as “superwoman”), then she became a MMP program assistant, led students in field studies in Costa Rica, and organized countless outreach activities, went on to get her masters degree at Touro, was a beloved teacher in the and biology departments at , while getting a second Masters at CSUEB and doing more research internships, before going on to get her PhD.

Quals are one of the most difficult exams ever concocted: armed with just your brains, determination and a few years of intensive self-directed study, you face off with a panel of old Berkeley professors who can ask you pretty much anything about all of . If you don’t pass you can’t continue your PhD, and they don’t pass everyone.

As an African American, from , she is also making a significant dent in diversifying Cal where only 3% of grad students are African American. She is studying novel ways to approach curing .

A really good and very readible review article on Brainbow. Strongly recommended if you want to better undersand how this fluorescent protein application actually works, and what makes Brainbow not just a source of amazing pictures, but a genuine breakthrough in how we're able to image cell networks, complex tissues, and developmental biology.

Brainbow is a genetic cell-labeling technique where hundreds of different hues can be generated by stochastic and combinatorial expression of a few spectrally distinct fluorescent proteins. Unique color profiles can be used as cellular identification tags for multiple applications such as tracing ax...
