Francis Tuttle is hiring a part-time (29 hours/week) Work Skills Trainer for our Project SEARCH program. This position is responsible for training and supporting student interns during their on-site work rotations, assisting with job development and placement of student interns.

Francis Tuttle campuses will be closed this Friday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. We will reopen for regular hours on Monday, June 22.

Juneteenth recognizes the date when federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX on June 19, 1865 to ensure the freedom of enslaved people. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, it took more than two years for troops to reach Galveston, signaling freedom for Texas' 250,000 slaves. It was established as a federal holiday in June 2021.

When Makenna Dill first connected a tiny light-emitting diode to a breadboard at Francis Tuttle Technology Center, she didn't expect the simple exercise to change the course of her future.
While the project, completed during an electrical unit in the Engineering Academy, may have seemed simple, it sparked something bigger for Dill.

“I thought that was the most exciting thing ever,” she said.

Industry certifications are an important piece of many program at Francis Tuttle - and for Pre-Nursing students, completing the Nurse Aide (NA) certification prepares them to enter the healthcare field or pursue an adult health program.

New instructors Chelsea Cutright, Rachel Watkins, and Melissa Weingartner saw an opportunity to approach test preparation differently to make it feel more familiar for students.

They created the "Pre-Nursing Boot Camp" to help students prepare for their exams. Students received skills books with practice scenarios to work through, with each student playing a different role, including a one-on-one test with an instructor to mimic the skills state testing environment.

Their approach proved successful - with 81 of 83 students passing both portions of the exam! 🙌

Long before he started Francis Tuttle Technology Center’s Engineering Academy, Jaden Azbill was crafting paper lightsabers after watching “Star Wars.”

What started as childhood imagination developed into a passion for engineering. That interest expanded in seventh grade after Azbill took an engineering class and experimented with 3D printing. After seeing one of his early projects, his parents bought him his own 3D printer.

“I’ve always been interested in engineering and designing stuff,” shared Azbill, who completed the Engineering Academy on the Danforth Campus last month. “I’ve made all these different things, and that got me into engineering. I got a 3D printer when I was 12 years old, and I’ve made all these cool props. When I heard about an engineering program at Francis Tuttle, I jumped to sign up.”

We wrapped up an amazing first week of Summer Quest today! Campers learned skills like:

- Building and coding robots
- How to set up and create videos to tell a story
- Engineering basics
- Build a babysitting business, complete with care and marketing tips
